It is hard to read a newspaper or watch the news and not be aware of how the unemployment rate is in our country. There are people out of work today that who never dreamed that they would be unemployed and have to start looking for a new job. With some much down sizing and businesses closing so many jobs have been lost. So if you are having to look for a new job here are some tips that will sharpen your skills for a great interview.

How to: Interview for Better Job

First, I suggest you do your homework. Learn everything you can about the company you are going to interview with. Most businesses have web sites today so read all about the company. Learn as much as you can about the industry this job is in. If there are any specific trends to this industry, familiarize yourself with them. Know what job you are interviewing for so you can match your skills best to the job. It is good to sound enthusiastic and interested but not desperate.

Secondly, dress like you are interviewing for a job. That means you want to dress professionally. It doesn't matter what the dress code is for the job you are applying for, for the interview you want to dress professionally. That means wearing clean clothes you looking clean, appropriate make-up and clean shaven. First impressions are very important.

Third, you want to be on time for your interview. Allow yourself enough time to get there. Plan for surprise traffic. It is better to be 20 minutes early than late. If you are going to be late make sure you call to explain why you will be late.

Fourth, exude confidence. have good eye contact and always show a firm hand shake. You want to make the interviewer feel you are the best person for the job.

Fifth, make sure you bring multiple copies of your resume. There may be more than one interviewer. You want to present yourself in a positive manner. Don't be negative about past positions. Focus on the good things you got out of your former positions. What experience you gained.

Lastly, it is good to ask questions about the company or the position you are interviewing for, but on a first interview you never want to ask about compensation packages. These things should not be discussed until they offer you the job.
