Locating an Online Provider for Counselor CEUs

Posted: Jan 28, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Your license renewal is due soon. Time to drudge through the periodical ads, surf the net, scan the various email promotions, and dig up the flyers on all of the CE Providers that you have to choose from to fulfill your license continuing education requirements. Every counselor has to deal with this, although, no one necessarily enjoys it.

So, what options are there? One of them is to attend a workshop or conference out of state. This takes a lot of money and time aside from the workshop or conference itself. Then there is the time and money for the actual conference. All the while hoping you gain something of value from one of the speakers. This has been the traditional method of earning continuing education units/credits (CEUs) over the years. What other options are there?

Oh the joy and benefit of the internet. Continuing education online is becoming the option of choice. States are allowing more and more credits to be earned from online sources. Some allow all of one's continuing education credits to be earned online. This preserves two very precious commodities, your time and money. Time and money saved that would have been spent at the airport, rental car place, hotel, etc. Now that time and money can be put back in your pocket, your family and your business.

Sounds like acquiring CE online is the best option. What is the best way to choose the provider? Not all CE providers are on the same level. One should look at a variety of factors before choosing a provider. Don't settle on a provider who only meets one or two of these items, but rather take the time to search and find one who meets all of theses.

The top priority is to find a provider that is approved to offer continuing education to counselors in your state. The one approval that covers Professional Counselors in most states is the one from the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). Check to see if the provider has this approval. The NBCC issues a provider number to each approved provider that should be displayed somewhere on the provider's website. Even though this approval covers most states, some states are not. Do your homework and know what your state board accepts.

Secondly, look at the course list. Are all of the basic courses offered in order for you to fulfill your requirements in one place. Typically, you can get the best deal if you purchase your units in bulk at one location. The online provider should have the basic courses, but they should also have enough other choices for you to expand your expertise and skill set. Look at this process as a time to reach above your current abilities and knowledge and seek to enhance your professional career. One last thing on the course list, be sure that the content is quality content and is sourced properly.

Thirdly, you want to look for those "bonus" features that are not offered on most sites. Things like: 1) if you don't pass you don't have to pay, 2) viewing the course content and exams before purchasing or even registering, 3) an easy to navigate website, 4) being allowed to take the exam as many times as needed to pass without paying additional fees, and 5) great customer support (test this by calling or emailing the company to ask a question and see how they respond).

Although online continuing education has made the process a lot simplier, cost effective and time saving, there is still work to be done. Get the foundational info done first. Understand your own state's laws. Then use the criteria above to find the right fit for you. All of this will culminate in a more robust continuing education experience.
