Although a location scout will not always have access to a project's completed script they are often given early drafts or a synopsis of the plot which will help them to visualise what kind of location is required for various different scenes.
For larger productions or for productions that are shooting in two or more countries more than one location scout may be used in order to find as many suitable filming locations as possible. Location scouts need to be well travelled, and must have a strong artistic vision in order to see the potential for use as a dramatic backdrop in even the most seemingly mundane of places.
When a scout has found a suitable location they will need to take photos, write down their observations about the area and suggest additional props or special effects that would make the location mesh with the visual tone of the rest of the project. Scouts can also find locations and suggest they be used as a template for studio sets if it is impossible or not desirable to film at the real-life location.
