Many careers are quickly disappearing, and those students that are looking toward a career for the future are having a hard time determining what that should be.  Statistics show that careers in the science and medical fields are alive and well and will, without a doubt, be as much in demand as they are now and will be in the future. One of the most needed at the present time and will continue to be needed are medical transcriptionists.

As you may know, medical reports, patient information and records are often written in a sort of code that only doctors and the originators of those reports, patient information and records can understand. The job of the medical transcriptionist is to convert this ununderstandable jargon into text.  The medical transcriptionist will also transcribe a doctor's oral report into written text.

The medical transcriptionist uses various forms of technology in order to do the job required; they will use computers as well as speech recognition technology to name two. They are needed in hospitals, clinics, in private practices, and can also work from their home (telecommute).

The medical transcriptionist's job consists of the following duties:

  • Accurately show the name, address, occupation of the patient as well as government numbers that appear on the information sheet;
  • Must be accurate in spelling, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation to ensure that the report has proper terminology and descriptions of procedures;
  • The medical transcriptionist must be able to sort out charts and records, collect dictation recordings, and distribute the transcribed data;
  • Find missing dictation, return all printed and digital reports on time;
  • Review their work for accuracy and quality and help with digital information maintenance;
  • They should be able to report technical issues and assist with inventory management;
  • In some instances the medical transcriptionist will gather and distribute statistical information.

If you feel the career of medical transcription is for you then you can take courses in the field online or in a physical school. Upon graduating from the school you will be considered a certified medical transcriptionist and go on to a well paid job. It is important however, before you decide that this is for you, that you are able to do the work accurately and keep confidential everything that you see, hear and write. The will be occasions when you may know the patient but you cannot say anything to them, your family, or their family. Confidentiality and accuracy are uppermost in being a responsible and reliable medical transcriptionist.
