My Dream of Becoming an Architect - StudentScholarships.org
Walking into the immaculate tower of offices, people rushing in and out in their silk business suits, I walk through the glass doors like I own the place, because I do. My assistant is at the door with my fresh cup of coffee and the plans for the newest project.
My first meeting for the day is with my biggest client. The owner of the fastest growing credit union in the state wants his buildings to look and feel like the safest place for investments. He tells me what he wants as I sketch several designs to give him the widest variety. After an hour or two, we come to a decision and schedule our next meeting at the job site.
My next client meets me at his home in an extremely wealthy neighborhood. The plans for his pool house have been misinterpreted by the construction workers. When I show up, the supervisor immediately quits arguing and listens as I describe what I wanted to create. He hustles his employees to get back to work after we discuss and come to a compromise. The owner proudly tells me how much he appreciates my willingness to work with his demands.
I head back to the office to finish plans for my other projects. The intern updates the drawings and the draftsmen point out what can be edited. I offer to take the intern to my next meeting. When we get to the board room, I watch the intern squirm with excitement and nerves. It reminds of my first meeting in the office. The meeting is with my partner and his employees. The two teams work together on architecture and civil engineering plans for a new city center. The city wants walkway bridges connecting the buildings with the main highway underneath. With the cities involvement, we create a beautiful scene and a safe route for the pedestrians and the automobiles. Together, the two teams achieve agreement with each other and the city. The result is the next biggest project for the company and plenty of work for my staff.
A day of running from meetings in the office to the job site and back is a dream day for me. I have wanted to be a successful architect since seventh grade. Creating a piece of the land for somebody to live in, people to work in, or for public use makes me feel that I contribute to everybody’s lives. I want to make pieces of art that are accessible for everybody to experience. I want to create landmarks, like the Louvre in Paris, the Taj Mahal in India, or Buckingham Palace in London. Knowing that I designed a structure that inspired and moved people would fulfill my life.
I also want to restore the beauty that had been created centuries ago. The mansions built on the plantations in southern colonies, or the handsome Victorian homes found all over the country that are slowly diminishing need to remain a part of the landscape. When these buildings are refinished, the natural splendor emerges from behind the damages done over the centuries. Bringing the magnificence of these structures into view again will keep diversity in the landscape.
Eventually, I want to own my own business that specializes in all architecture. I want to partner with other experienced architects so our clients have a wide variety to choose from. With enough experience, I will become an architect and I will own a thriving business.
