My Experience As A Video Game Tester
My day as a video game tester started at 9am. I would wake up at 8:30 and get ready like I would for any other job. This helped me get in the routine of being on time, and not miss my starting time, because my supervisors were strict on telecommuters (people who work from home). At exactly 8:55, I would fire up my PlayStation 3 and begin. Situated next to my laptop, it was easy to use the Internet or email for whatever supplemental tasks I needed. I would eat lunch at 1:30pm until 2, and then continue my work day until 6pm. Lunch was unpaid, so it's as if I had to clock out; but this was worthy of the fact that I can work from home, or while away from town.
Now, being a game tester isn't one-hundred percent fun and games; you have to do some work. Just because this is a $50,000,000,000 industry doesn't mean you can have a piece of the pie doing minimal work. By this, I mean you have to fill out papers and submit error reports when you encounter glitches in the plot. One game that I had to test was Madden 2009, and I was doing this work about 4 months before it rolled out in stores. Which, personally, I thought was pretty cool. I would spend about 80% of the time playing, and 20% of the time doing other work: making phone calls to game developers, filling out paperwork for each error that I would encounter, and meeting with people to get new game disks (unless they were mailed to me).
Here's the boring part of being a game tester: it gets very repetitive. It's not exactly like the commercials portray it - just sit at home all day and have a blast playing video games, even with a friend or two to show them off the new games that aren't even released yet. Most hirers will require you to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which will say that you risk losing your job if your employer has suspicion that you've leaked secrets from the plot, or any other game details that weren't already made public. You have to do the same task over and over and over, and once more over again. This is how my assignments would look like sometimes: "Use character X, walk from point A to point B. Repeat 50 times. Now, use character Y, walk from point A to point B, also repeat 50 times." Because you must conduct multiple trials of the same event in order to detect glitches, over and over, this can get pretty boring. At $40 per hour that I was getting paid, though, this job can't be beat.
