Nursing Diploma

Posted: Jan 03, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Nurses are extremely in demand today because of the aging population and technological advances which affect longevity and mortality rates in a given population. Infection and disease rates have also risen due to globalization and the ability for someone who may be suffering from an infectious disease to be in contact with hundreds, sometimes, thousands of people in just one day. Nursing is a challenging, strenuous, often taxing profession which requires a person to be intuitive, intelligent, self-motivated, and sympathetic towards the needs of others. If you have what it takes to study and train to be a nurse, you will be rewarded with one of the most fascinating, exhilarating, and satisfying jobs on the planet.

You will need to complete two to three years at a community college offering liberal arts' courses that meet requirements for an associate's degree nursing. After receiving your nursing diploma, you will qualify to take the NCLEX-RN examination which, upon passing, will allow you to apply for a registered nurse's license. By receiving an associate's nursing diploma, you will be able to work in entry-level nursing jobs at a variety of healthcare facilities. You could also endeavor to further your education and obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN).

What is the difference between a nursing degree and a nursing diploma? Actually, the difference between the two is negligible, especially if you just want an entry-level nursing job. Having a degree in nursing, however, will be necessary if you may want to further your career by going back to school in order to become a physician's assistant, or even a medical doctor. A Master's Degree in Nursing will qualify you to be work on a healthcare facility's administration staff, teach in a certified nursing program, or even work as a nurse practitioner.

The price of earning a nursing diploma can be minimal or somewhat costly, depending on the degree you want and the school you choose to attend. A two-hear community college may cost you around $70 a credit, while public universities may charge three times as much. Graduating with a nursing diploma from a private university may end up costing you as much as $80,000. It is up to you to decide whether you want to join the workforce as soon as possible or take advantage of federal student aid and student loans in order to procure the opportunities afforded by having an advanced education in nursing. Besides tuition, you will have other costs necessary in obtaining a nursing diploma such as lab fees, books and uniforms. Medical textbooks are notorious for being outrageously expensive and can range anywhere from several hundred dollars to close to a thousand dollars. Do a thorough search into ways you can cut your total costs of earning a nursing diploma, such as applying for scholarships and financial aid. In addition, some hospitals and larger nursing homes have been known to have programs which reimburse the student by working for them as they are attending school.
