Petroleum Drilling Employment - What You Should Know

Posted: Nov 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

When you are ready to begin your new oil drilling job after graduating from your roustabout or drilling school, you may be expecting something a lot more glamorous than you really get. The fact is that drilling is hard work, but the pay is excellent and the friendships that you make will last you your entire life. Getting a drilling job will be easy, once you have some training, experience and determination to make it work for you.

Getting hired is really a matter of putting yourself in front of people that are looking for workers and presenting yourself as the man for the job. Those who are competent and present a good attitude can be hired on as a greenhorn roustabout, often without having any prior experience.

This kind of work is similar to laboring jobs in all kinds of fields, but the pay is a lot better. The conditions, however, are not. Oil rig workers labor on no matter how hot it is, how cold, how wet, or how windy. If there is oil, you are drilling, and the weather is not a consideration. On the bright side, your work crew is right there with you, and if you work hard to impress them and help them, they will most certainly return the favor.

Drilling for oil certainly does pay well, but many oil rig workers find that the close knit friendships that develop when working for such long hours and in difficult conditions is an even better benefit than the money and the extended time off. When you discover oil, the adrenaline rush is unlike anything you can imagine, and you will be sharing it with people you are close too - it's a blast. Plus, knowing that you are helping provide for the needs of your country helps you to feel good about your work as well.

There is one word to describe oil rig work - filthy. You will be hard pressed to find a job that will have you more in need of a shower at the end of the day than drilling for oil. It is truly hard work; it is dirty, and it is uncomfortable. Oil jobs are not something that everyone will enjoy, so you should keep that in mind when you start your first job. Having a good attitude though will help you succeed, because your employer will see that and do everything he can to see you successfully trained, because truly, good help on the rigs is hard to find.

Helping you learn everything there is about drilling is definitely not what the rig operator has in mind, so once you are trained, they have a real investment in you. While the roughneck training programs out there certainly can help, the real learning, as in most career paths, takes place on the job. It is one thing to read about a blowout, and another to actually experience one, so once you are in a position to get your hands dirty and really learn the work, the gaps left by classroom instruction will be filled.

Make no mistake, learning how to drill for oil can be a real challenge, and the job itself even more challenging. If that is really what you want to do though, there is no teacher like experience, and you should strike while the iron is hot and get out there and land yourself a drilling job. You'll soon discover whether you love it or hate it, and be laying the foundation for a great career besides.
