Plumber Training: Do You Need It?

If you think that the cost of attending a trade school and the plumber training it offers is not worth the money, you should reconsider it.

The median hourly pay for pipe layers in the United States was 13.68 in 2004 when the wages were studies, and now the wages have increased from that. The lowest ten percent of plumbers, those plumbers starting out with their on-the-job training used to be paid only 9.19 each hour on an average and the highest ten percent of the plumbers used to be paid over 25.07.

You have to remember that these figures are for those plumbers who were either in the middle of their training or had completed their plumber training and were working for other plumbing companies or companies which are related to plumbing. Some plumbers who work for themselves earn up to $130 per hour. However, these plumbers are usually those who pay the overhead costs of the plumbing business and also people who work under them in the business thus, it is not as nice as it sounds.

However, plumbing jobs are very popular because when a person needs a plumber, he or she really needs one. Most people cannot do plumbing jobs on their own, and have to wait for the plumber to arrive and take care of the unpleasant problem which is on their hands. If you wish to train as a plumber, you can get plumber training in a good vocational school or trade school which offers plumbing as a course. Professional industrial and residential plumbers are needed to have at least some kind of formal plumber training, including on-the-job training and being an apprentice in order to have a well-rounded plumbing education.

Everyone relies on plumbers to give us running water and to maintain cold and hot water tanks, taps, water pipes and valves of plumbing systems. We also rely on professional plumbers to install, maintain and repair electrical systems and HVAC systems. Good plumbing schools with accreditations are outfitted with proper professional tools and they also provide comprehensive plumber training courses according to the National Standard Plumbing Code. The study of physics, mathematics, tools, equipment, mechanical drawing, installation, troubleshooting, and the theory of materials, piping systems, bacteriology and sanitation is part of the practical training. There will also be hands-on experience and on-the-job instruction as part of the training as they are necessary for those training for professional plumbing.

It will take you about four years to reach the status of a journeyman and this is the stage where you assume the full responsibilities of an expert craftsman. There will be many chances to move into a supervising role and into estimation of sales, design and management if you are interested. Your skill, intelligence, ambition and communication will determine your progress in the plumbing industry.

Vocational plumbing courses are quite similar to training for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) in the way that both are trades requiring skill, deftness and coordination with hands. Both are also services which are frequently performed out of doors. Electronics systems technology is another field of study which is related to these two discussed above.
