Pluses of Being a Lifeguard
Reason 1: Get to Work Outdoors
If you dream of summer, you imagine fun in the sun -- lounging around by the pool, going for a swim. Even teenagers who have other occupations anticipate when they find sufficient leisure time to leave and spend time at the pool or beach. Why confine yourself to that pleasure when you have off? Earn money to relax in the sunshine.
Reason 2: Gain Prized Proficiencies
Lifeguards must be accredited in life-saving skills including water rescues, CPR, and general first-aid. These are invaluable skills that could come in handy throughout your life. The accreditations that you receive as a lifeguard are also a terrific starting point in planning for other employment, like EMTs.
Reason 3: Become a Better Leader
The single skill that will profit you most substantially in the course of your life as you look to progress in your professional life is being an effective leader. Lifeguarding is an incredible first job for honing your leadership abilities, given that it offers you a great deal of accountability and requires you to confront people who are challenging the safety of your segment of water. Make no mistake, lifeguards are leaders.
Reason 4: Build Up That Savings Account
While you won't make your first million as a lifeguard, it definitely does tend to pay much better than many of the summer jobs open to teenagers. Earning more than minimum wage is a decent bonus for teen workers. The total you receive depends on the location of your job -- community pools and amusement parks usually pay the lowest. Country clubs and private pools tend to offer better salaries.
The best paying lifeguard jobs are usually ones where you work at a State Park or a stretch of beach along an ocean or lake. Those jobs will pay as high as $17 hourly, largely for the reason that they call for a higher grade of certification -- open-water certification.
Even if you don't get the open-water certification, you'll probably earn more than you would at another job, plus you'll get the benefit of a better work environment.
Reason 5: Enjoy Time With Your Buddys
Few other jobs offer the social interaction afforded to lifeguards. Sure, you have responsibility to watch over your stretch of water, but on breaks and between shifts you'll have plenty of time to interact with your friends. You'll also find that the lifeguarding staff becomes a close-knit group, and you may end up making some of your best friends from your new colleagues.
By working as a lifeguard you will have an incredible chance to make new life-long mates.
