Ranks in the Military
Ranks in the military are the structure that defines who makes the decisions. Every branch of the Armed Forces has their own names for every rank, but all the services share the same pay structure established by the Department of Defense. I will write about the enlisted ranks in the Marine Corps since I am familiar with them.
The Marine Rank structure could be described in three parts. The junior ranks include Privates, Private First Class, and Lance Corporals. The NCO ranks which involves the Ranks of Corporal and Sergeant and the SNCO ranks which include Staff Sergeants, Gunnery Sergeants, master Sergeants or First Sergeants, master Gunnery Sergeants or Sergeant Majors.
The junior ranks start with Privates right from boot camp, Marines automatically get the rank of Private First Class once they have four months in service, the rank of Lance Corporal is obtained after nine months of grade in service. The first two ranks are earned automatically as long as the Marine has a good conduct throughout this period.
The NCO ranks include corporals and Sergeants. Marines have to accumulate points in different areas in order to earn the rank of Corporal and Sergeant. Marines also must meet time in grade and time in service to be able to earn the title of Non Commissioned Officers in the Marine Corps.
The SNCO ranks include the ranks from Staff Sergeant until Sergeant Major or master Gunnery Sergeant. In order to be promoted in the SNCO ranks Marines must meet time in grade and time in service. There is a yearly board that lasts approximately two months where all qualified Marines records are thoroughly inspected to ensure only the most qualified Marines are promoted.
Ranks in the military are very necessary to ensure everyone knows their place within the organization. Everyone knows the military is very strict when it comes to obeying orders and the rank structure is one way to ensure obedience.
