Job opportunities can often present themselves through your own personal and social networks. Sometimes you may not even be looking to find a job and job opportunities might come up based purely on who you know.
The answer is to keep in contact with your networks.
Why? Well, these days, employers are very selective about where they advertise these job opportunities, particularly for more senior level individuals. They are even more selective about choosing potential candidates for these job opportunities, and as a result, selection can be a very long process.
Employers are far more willing to see candidates for job opportunities that have been recommended by internal employees and that's where your networks become important. If you have relationships with people, they can refer you to job opportunities long before they are even advertised.
So how do you ‘get networking'?
• Start to look for job opportunities within your existing networks. Are there people you know currently who may have job opportunities within their organisations?
• If you want to get into a specific industry or company, see who in your existing network might know of a job opportunity through other people in their networks. Ask to be introduced to these people.
• You could join professional associations within your industry. These associations meet regularly and you could get to know key people within your industry who may also know of various job opportunities.
• Where did you study? Most tertiary education institutions have Alumni where you can meet up with and network with previous students who may also know of job opportunities within their current organisations.
• When you meet new people socially, find out what they do and see if they are aware of job opportunities that might be suitable for you.
• And don't be afraid of having informal conversations while standing at the bus stop or in a queue – you never know what job opportunities can come up in random conversation.
• And very importantly, don't burn your bridges! Keep your networks from previous jobs intact, otherwise you will not be the first person they think of contacting when they hear about job opportunities that might suit you.
During your job search, you will look for jobs online and you might trawl the newspapers, but never underestimate the power of your networks. They may present job opportunities you wouldn't have known about if it wasn't for who you know.
