Resume Objective - How To Write Them The Right Way

Posted: Dec 22, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

It can be difficult for companies to determine which prospecitve applicant is a better fit for their company. This understanding of your potential employer's perspective can be used to craft a job getting resume objective. Make it specific to the company to which you are applying. But also keep it specifically targeted to your goals, visions and strengths as well.

Vague and general tell the prospective employer nothing about how you would fit into their company environment but that is the mistake made by a great deal of job seekers.. These resume objectives may go something like this:

*A position in a company allowing me to utilize my knowledge and expertise in different areas.

Just adding the type of company and/or organization as well as the type of skills you wish to utilize or improve will be much better than the statement above.

Think of it in this manner. If you want to be employed by a restaurant, take it further. Do you want it to be french, italian or american? Should it be casual, elegant or a dive? Use this same train of thought for any job.

Here are some more appropriate examples of a resume objective statement.

*Position as a mail room supervisor at John Doe Incorporated.
*Obtain employment at Jane Doe Inc. where I can further my administrative skills in the advertising department.
*Sales position with a wholesale company using my business to business communication skills to increase revenue.
*To procure a job with a fortune 100 company that will provide a stable future utilizing my experience in the financial department.

These are variations of particular resume objectives. You'll note that they include defined qualifications such as supervisory, business to business communication and financial experience. Some examples include the name of the specific company being applied and this can be a smart move if you take the time to individualize each resume objective.

Yet another example, especially in the case where you may not have specific job or industry experience would be to note more non-specific but not so general as follows:

*Looking for the opportunity to expand my organizational and detail oriented skills in an entry level administrative assistant position for a fortune 500 finance manager.

So regardless of your level of qualification, if any, be specific whenever possible in your resume objective. Without a doubt, naming the company in your objective will catch the eye of the employer much more quickly than that applicant that used a vague and general objective statement.
