We will pull together all the great things you created in the preceding four articles to build one or more solid career options for you.
Specifically, in article #4 you built your "Top 3" lists. The result? Those lists will prove amazingly powerful. You now know your Top 3 Skills, Top 3 Talents, Top 3 Strengths, Top 3 Weaknesses, and Top 3 Preferences.
Questions?
If you need more details on these Top 3 lists, then please contact me (noted at end of article).
But before I go any farther, you need to know this:
the reason you need the critical strategic ideas in the following paragraphs is:
you need to invest time to find your best career options because that is the critical secret in your entire job search process.
Only when you know your best career options will you then be able to maximize your resume,
maximize your ability to get interviews,
maximize your effectiveness in the interviews,
and hence get your job!!
And that is what we are talking about, correct?
>> Important Resume Tip >> If you think all this sounds like too much work, then stop and ask yourself what your dream job is actually worth. What price tag can you put on finally getting into that job you wanted to discover for so long?
The Time Machine:
Your TV is a Time Machine. It is a machine that relentlessly uses up hours of your life! I challenge you to turn off your TV for 30 minutes of your normal TV schedule each day.
Think about it: are you going to let reruns of Wheel Of Fortune or even some reality TV show steal time from finding your dream job?!
Promise yourself right now that you will clip 30 minutes off your dial TV schedule.
...or are you more of an introvert / "I will figure this out on my own" person?
Here is the resume tip behind that question:
The extroverts are almost always better off going to other people to unveil their best career options.
If you are an extrovert and do * NOT * like the internet, then write down a few names of friends, relatives, bosses, pastors, etc. with whom you can speak openly. Then schedule time with them to sit and talk through your Top 3 lists.
Specifically, you will brainstorm with one or more of those people to consider roles, job titles, and career options that make best use of that set of list of strengths, weaknesses, and so on. Yes, you may also need to make a list of other people to talk to dig deeper into all this.
If you are an extrovert and * DO * like the internet, then you have an advantage. Follow this path:
- Go to www.Linkedin.com, then log in (or create your profile if new to the site)
- At upper right of their page, click on the their "Advanced" link
- In the "Keywords" box type in one or more of your strengths, filter out your weaknesses; advantage your skills and talents
- To narrow down your search results, filter by "Location" or "Title" or "Industry" as needed
Here is your goal: to browse the profiles of people who share any number of your "Top 3" list attributes, take notes on what careers they have, then connect with them in Linkedin in order to open a direct dialog about how they arrived at their job and any secrets they wish to share on how they got there.
>> Big Resume Tip >> Ask these people for just 10-15 minutes of their valuable time for an Informational Interview. If they do not know what that is, simply say it is a way to share success principles relevant to how they earned their role, as well as how you can close the gap between your current situation and actually doing a role similar to theirs.
Now, for the introverts, the is in some ways harder, and in other ways easier.
Introverts have it harder in that they may find it more time consuming to get to the final list of best career options. The time consumer aspect of their search will hinge on how rapidly they find the print resources or internet sites to reveal the careers for their "Top 3" lists.
Introverts have it easier -- especially if they like the internet -- in that a large majority of people find what they need at www.ONetCenter.org/
If you are an introvert and * DO * like the internet, then you have an advantage. Follow this path:
- Go to http://www.onetcenter.org/using.html and use their tutorial to learn how best to take advantage of their website
- You will likely find these two pages have the tools you need:
-- > http://online.onetcenter.org/find/
-- > http://online.onetcenter.org/skills/
- Use your Top 3 lists in combination with these web pages to uncover the careers best suited for one or more of your strengths, filter out your weaknesses, and take advantage of your skills and talents
