StudentScholarships.org - Becoming a Teacher

Define a dream job. For one little boy it may be a professional football player, for some other little girl, a ballerina, to your next door neighbor an astronaut. According to StudentScholarships.org, there is no universal definition for dream job. It is a personal outlook that is affected by many individual factors such as an individual's geographic location, skill, ability, role models, self esteem, and age. My personal dream job can be defined as a profession that not only do I feel I would be good at, but also something that I enjoy doing. Even more than that, something I am truly passionate about - teaching.

When I was in kindergarten, I can remember how badly I struggled with learning how to read and the countless times I wanted to give up. One particular experience I have carried with me my entire life is that of my second grade reading exam. My teacher chose a book entitled "Fox on the Box", in which the entire class had to learn how to read by Christmas break. We would practice reading in class and were instructed to read it at home with our parents for homework. Try as I might, I simply could not understand the concept of reading. I was rather sure I had a problem, but was too embarrassed to tell anyone. So, I started paying closer attention when other children would practice out loud in class and I actually memorized the whole book. When it was my turn to take the test, I passed with a perfect score. But I didn't read the book; I simply recited it from memory.

I managed to get away with this "trick" of mine until the third grade, when my teacher caught on to what I was doing. She pulled me aside at recess and asked me to read her a book that I had never seen before. I knew I wasn't going to be able to and started to cry. Mrs. Henderson hugged me and offered to work with me during recess and after school to help me learn.

I can still remember the first book I truly read, The Cat in the Hat. I can remember how proud I was of myself and even at that young age how grateful I was to my teacher for noticing my inability and helping me learn. From that point on, I fell in love with learning. I wanted to share the gift that my teacher had given me, the gift of education. To this day, I take advantage of every opportunity I get to learn new things and to share the knowledge I have gained with anyone who will listen.

In my heart, I know teaching is not only my dream job, but probably the only job that could ever truly make me happy. I know that if I can teach one person one new thing everyday that I will help shape the leaders of tomorrow into making this world a better place for everyone.
