Taking in a sweetly scented breath of fresh air, I reached for the door-handle and anxiously marched into a new and exciting time in my life. The weight from the stacks of papers tugged at my briefcase, slowing my brisk trot down the hallway toward my classroom.

The hallway wasn’t the same as I’d last remembered it eight years ago. It’d been bursting with teenagers full of life and excitement. Now the hallway was empty with its freshly painted lockers and newly polished floors. As I walked past the gymnasium and the boys’ locker room, I took in a new aroma. It was a pleasant change from the sweat smell that usually accompanied the territory.

As I turned the corner, I spotted it, room 218. The big white numbers stood bold against the black oak door. When I walked into the room, a rush of excitement surged throughout my body. I looked around the plain, little room where I’d spend the next nine months inspiring young minds.

My eyes were then drawn to a rectangular desk and chair across the room. I skipped on over to it and plopped into the chair propping my feet on the desk. In thirty minutes the room would be filling with thirty tired-looking teenagers annoyed that they had to get up so early for the first day of school, and I had to motivate them to learn.

I thought back to when I was their age. Those last two years in high school were jam-packed with ACT review, exams, and deadlines. That was also the time when I had to make a choice that would affect the rest of my life. It was the most important choice I was ever going to make in order to be happy and successful, and that was choosing a career.

Choosing a career is a huge decision because it determines how you will live the rest of your life. Your career determines where you live, your standard of living, and your sense of fulfillment and happiness.

Little does anyone realize it, but from the day they walk into their kindergarten classroom, they are preparing for adulthood. Each year that goes by, they are one step closer to choosing a career. Then before they know it, it’s time to make the big decision based on their interests and abilities.

Now here I am on my first day as a teacher. I worked diligently to get where I’m at, and it’s only the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in my life.

Suddenly a piercing sound followed by the noise of slamming lockers interrupted my thoughts. As the students dragged into the classroom, I knew I’d made the right career decision. Even though they don’t look eager to learn, I am eager for the challenge and opportunity to inspire them. All of my uncertainties about my career decision vanished. Teaching is my love and my passion. I am determined to help these students reach their full potential.
