It is typical for a little girl, when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” for her to say a teacher. I was one of those little girls. Whenever asked that question, I would always respond with wanting to be a teacher. I would sit there with my stuffed animals and conduct a class with my scribbled lesson plans in crayon. The idea of being able to come up with a different lesson each day challenged me enough to get excited about becoming a teacher. I was able to share my knowledge with others.
When I went into middle school, I realized there was more to life than just teaching. I wanted to get a little further into the minds of children and help them with their problems. A school counselor sounded like a great idea. I liked to help my friends with problems they were having and I liked being a problem solver all around. I continued this into high school. My sophomore year I took a psychology class. During psychology class, we learned more about adults and the changes that affected their minds over the years. The idea of being able to help older people with their problems along with children made me want to become a family counselor or a family psychologist. It would allow me to specialize in more than one area.
The second semester of my sophomore year, I began taking medical classes like health science and emergency medical services. These classes opened a big door for me toward the medical field. My junior year came around and I was only required to take chemistry, but I took anatomy and physiology along with it. My medical classes intrigued me to go into the medical field.
Not too long ago, someone said to me, “What do you want to major in when you go to college?” It reflected the same question I had been asked when I was younger. I stopped and thought way back to when I conducted my class of stuffed animals, helped my friends with problems, learned about the adult mind, and the hands on experience I had with my medical classes. I had to somehow tie all of my dream jobs that I had throughout my life into one compact idea. I took the dream of working with children, the dream of helping others, and the dream of an experience in the medical field and turned it into one big dream.
I want to become a pediatric nurse. I have had all the dreams a person could have in the course of my life, but this is the one that will make the difference. This job will allow me to fulfill each aspect of my dream job that I have been grasping for. I cannot wait for the day that I get to go into my job and know that I am going to make at least one child smile or one child’s day better because it’s my job.
