In order to be happy and successful, one must take into account their values. Through socialization, one develops certain priorities that determine what he believes success is. This success invariably leads to happiness. A fulfilling job, facilitated by an appropriate college major, often leads to being successful. Because of my well-rounded academic ability, disregard for a high income, and passion for the arts, choosing a major was the most important decision I have made to ensure that I am happy and successful in the future.

As a student throughout middle and high school, I have demonstrated aptitude in all major disciplines. I am able to grasp the concepts of subjects such as advanced chemistry, musical performance, algebra, and composition with ease. Because of my well-rounded knowledge and ability in opposite, incompatible fields, I believe that I could conceivably achieve any major at a four-year university. Having the capacity to learn and engage in many unrelated disciplines made my choice of major a long and incredibly important process. The significance of this decision will make itself known in my future financial situation.

The degree that one holds upon graduating college loosely dictates their financial future. For instance, one with a pharmaceutical degree is likely to make more in his lifetime than one who has achieved a degree in music education. For many students, the looming ‘real world’ in which one has to pay bills and provide for a family likewise dictates the decision of what to study in college. I feel that considering future income is a mistake in deciding a field of study. If I were to have made the important decision of a college major based on the false pretense of money equaling happiness, I would have opted for astrophysics. I have disregarded the possibility of a high income and followed my interests. My measure of happiness and success rests in studying and engaging in a field about which I am passionate.

The arts have been a central part of my life since adolescence, and I feel that choosing to study a facet of the arts in college was an incredibly important choice regarding my accomplishments in the future. If I were to be a business administration major, I would not be pursuing my passion. Studying economics and statistics is not a fulfilling alternative. Such a degree would likely lead to a more financially impressive future at the expense of overlooking my artistic avenues. Creative writing is something for which I have much enthusiasm; achieving a major in that field will quantify more success and happiness to me than any six-digit income ever could.

The most important decision in my life is the choice of my major in college. Though I am talented in many disciplines, I chose to focus on my love of art, not money. I believe that this choice will ensure my happiness and successfulness as an adult.
