StudentScholarships.org - Dentistry as a Profession

Suppose you are living abroad in a third world country on a diplomatic mission overseeing security for the construction of a new U.S. Embassy compound, and an accident occurs causing you to fall and chip some teeth. Where would you go for help? The U.S. Foreign Service provides diplomats with a medical unit, and after seeking their assistance you find that you can either risk a repair job on the local market, or take a medivac (medical evacuation) to a country with better developed dental care. The decision is a difficult one, as the medivac will ensure high-quality dental work, while the local practice offers a quicker and less expensive alternative. You find yourself wishing that the government had a dentist at post whose prompt and professional service you could count on. This is my dream job: to work overseas in U.S. Embassies as a Foreign Service Dentist.

Dentists have interesting and rewarding careers. I am drawn to dentistry as it is a profession dedicated to helping other people. Dentists relieve pain and help people stay healthy and beautiful. I think it would be gratifying to use the knowledge and expertise gained in dental school to repair a patient's teeth, and then view the final product; the work of my own hands. According to StudentScholarships.org, Dentistry is the art of applying science and technology to create new, more efficient means of solving tooth and mouth problems.

The transient lifestyle of a U.S. Foreign Service employee is also very appealing to me. The prospect of having a secure job that would allow me to live and experience new things in different countries is most favorable. I have had the chance to live overseas as a dependant of a Foreign Service employee and have enjoyed learning about the people, languages and cultures of the places we have lived. Every two or three years we were assigned to a new part of the world, where we would quickly settle in and begin learning about our new country of residence. Growing up in this manner has not only served to enhance my education and knowledge of the world, but to increase my fondness for change and desire to work abroad in a similar fashion.

Although Foreign Service dentists are nonexistent, there are a number of reasons why having them would be advantageous. A large number of U.S. diplomats working abroad still have their dental work done by their hometown providers in America. Many countries lack the advanced dental health standards and technology that exist in the United States, forcing the embassy community to rely on poor quality preventative care and incur large expenses from medical evacuations. In these countries, embassy personnel and their families would benefit greatly from having a trained dentist on hand for regular check-ups and emergencies. If such a practical job were created, I would be the first to volunteer my services. The opportunity to live overseas working as a dentist for the government is truly my dream job.
