For as long as I can remember there have been two driving forces in my life, my love of music, and my love of working with people, especially children. All through High School my educational goal was to become a teacher, but because of my strong involvement in the musical community at my High School, I was encouraged to pursue music in my post-secondary education. I was informed about the wonderful Jazz program at Capilano University in Vancouver; I was accepted and attended for the past two years.
Most of my work experience through Junior High and High School had to do with working with children of all different backgrounds and abilities, and it is something that I have continued in my time here in Vancouver. Although I really enjoyed the Jazz Studies program, I have come to realize that something very important is missing. I need to combine my love of music with my love of working with children, and the best way to do that for me is to be a Music Therapist.
I have not known about the program long, in fact I only learned of the field when I came out to Vancouver, but through my research into it I know that it is the perfect career for me. I believe whole heartedly in the power of music to help people, and as an advocate for differentiated education I believe that our society needs to start seeking different methods of teaching children and adults that are more creative and meaningful. My own use of music has enhanced my self-confidence enormously, and has provided me with a very good stress reducing tool, among many other benefits.
I have not only seen the growth in myself, but also in others around me. Since learning about the program I have done a lot of specific research on the use of Music Therapy with children with Autism, and have started to apply some of the findings and methods to my work as a Behavioural Interventionist. The progress that I see as a result of using music inspires me and excites me about learning so much more in the field and putting my knowledge to work.
Music Therapy seems like an ideal career because I will always be working with people, and helping other people to reach their full potential. It is so inspiring to watch people find their confidence and realize their skills, and I love the feeling that I get from knowing that I helped that person to accomplish their goals. It is a fast-paced career that has unlimited opportunity for change and growth and creativity, and that is something that I strongly desire. I also feel that it will be an excellent platform for further educational pursuits. It is my dream to become a Music Therapist.
