A CDL (Commercial Drivers License) is the fundamental qualification required; if you want to kick start a career with a lot of success as a driver of trucks. Government Records and stats forecast around 25% rise in the job openings to truck drivers, who qualify. When the economy is on a boom, the truck will be a major carrier of goods and cargo. Naturally, this will converge into a great need for truck drivers with qualifications like the CDL. To drive those huge vehicles, it is required by law to complete your CDL and go through the process to train for a career in driving trucks.
Vocational technical schools and also public colleges conduct courses to train you in CDL, as also training schools, which will coach you privately. Make sure the school or college you choose is accredited with the Professional Truck Driving Institute. This recognition will make sure that the school is up to all the levels set up by the government to ensure good driving skill and adherence to safety norms. Note also that you meet the legal requirements of law to get admission to train with CDL. It is necessary to be 18 years of age for local driving and 21 years for truck drivers covering interstates. It is also obligatory to pass the DEPT. of Transportation examinations for health, physical and drug testing before attempting your CDL.
Normally, the CDL aspirants train for a period of about 150 to 300 hours. You can choose either normal day programs or a program on the weekend as per your convenience. You train in two parts i.e. training inside the class and the "on the road" instructions. Then you do real driving as a practicing tool to enable you to pass the CDL examinations. In the class sessions, you'll go through a variety of subjects to assist you get the know-how and skill needed in this job. Class A, B, and C of CDL is given to you depending on the trucks tow capacity and the kind of goods the truck will carry. In the class, you'll study all the technical aspects of truck driving and all round knowledge applicable to you. You'll learn:
. Use of air brakes, where trucks possess this.
. Transportation of dangerous goods.
. Driving trucks with two or three trailers.
. How to keep your logbooks.
. Correctly reporting working hours.
. Information on route plans.
. Ability and knowledge on how to read a map.
. Spotting dangers.
. How to drive in various climates.
. Safe driving tips.
Secondly, the parts you'll cover in the next phase of training will include:
. On road training.
. How to do a check and inspect whether the truck assigned to you is in good condition for the trip, before you start your journey.
. On the job training on having full command over your truck, when moving ahead, driving back and various aspects of turning. How to change gears, uses of the clutch and driving on ascending and descending roads are all included.
. Practical driving is given on negotiating an intersection, lane changes, and care at railway crossing points.
. Caution on a densely populated street and also on the highway.
