The Importance of Relaxation When Working From Home

There are few people who would be able to kick back and relax at work without fear of retribution or job termination. Such a thing would not be expected or in fact accepted by an employer. Instead, you are expected to be alert and ready to work. But how does this affect you when you work in your own home?

When working in a traditional environment you must be awake, alert and ready to go - your whole attitude is different from when you are at home relaxing. Yet relaxation is important, for your family as well as for yourself. However, when you are surrounded by your work at all times, it is easy to remain in the work frame of mind. It can be difficult to switch gears.

There are some steps that can be taken to minimize this problem. First and foremost you should attempt to set up a home office. With all work, and work tools kept in their own room, you may be able to achieve a separation of work and home life similar to what happens when you leave the office behind at the end of the workday. That is, when your period of work is complete, you leave your home office and go back to your home life and family, switching off the work mode.

For many people a complete and separate home office may not be possible. In that case another method of separation is needed. Setting up your work in a private corner of the house that is away from the main living areas of the home can help you to leave it all behind. Even a corner of the basement could work for you. For this and all other home office situations, a separate phone line dedicated to your business will prevent you being disturbed by your work once you finish, as you can divert all calls to voice mail (just remember to check your messages the following day).

Even this level of separation may not be possible. Space could be limited, or you might be a work at home parent who needs to keep an eye on your children. If this is your situation you might consider working on a laptop instead of a desktop, if you need a computer. This will allow you to take work with you and complete what you can, when you can.

If you work with other materials and tools then keeping a suitably sized storage box for them may be enough to neatly and safely put them away at the end of the workday. If a box cannot be found then put the items in the basement on a table, or in a spare room. Anything that puts the work out of sight and mind when you are not working will help concentrate on what's most important at the moment.

It's not always easy to relax, even when you don't work at home, but when you do there is an added challenge. The effort is more than worth it and is in fact its own reward when you are properly able to return to work refreshed and happy the following day.
