The Real Impact of Job Elimination

Posted: Dec 01, 2009 |Comments: 0 | Views: 153 |

We obviously all know of the impact of job elimination and layoffs from an actual standpoint (no job, no money, etc.) but could the impact be much greater?  There was an article written recently that highlighted the impact of layoffs and company closings in a grander sense.  A company called Honeywell Hobbs has partnered with Sparc, an organization that provides access to employment for people with developmental disabilities.  They (Sparc and Honeywell Hobbs) give developmentally disabled individuals a sense of purpose and something valuable to do.  In many cases receiving little pay and providing a service to companies that is helpful but invaluable to those with such disabilities.  This program is in jeopardy because Honeywell Hobbs is closing their Springfield, IL plant due to the economic downturn, read more here, http://www.sj-r.com/business/x1158540747/Hobbs-closing-to-hurt-SPARC-clients-too.

So we all know that job loss and company closings are painful however we never think of those that are hurt beyond repair.  Honeywell Hobbs is honorable in participating in this program and has been involved for a long time providing the ability for the disabled to be active and productive members of society.  Being that many organizations focus more on productivity and profits, rather then programs such as these, the opportunities to allow those with disabilities to make a difference are becoming more limited as we speak.

So now what?  To people with developmental disabilities their job is more then their livelihood but rather an outlet to be a member of the world and a sense of accomplishment and pride.  While the current economic conditions are far beyond any one individual or company’s ability to change, our overall physical ability to go out and try to find another job is something we perhaps take for granted at times?  Options are limited for those with disabilities and they can’t just go out and search indeed.com.  So what can we take from all of this?  Maybe knowing that these current challenges effect us all in different ways, might bring us closer to understanding and compassion as we begin our recovery.

Just something to chew on for today.
