The Resume Myth - How To Find Your Perfect Career In An Effective Manner

The Resume Myth - How to find your perfect career.

Despite the fact that our world offers an abundance of career opportunities many people just aren't aware of them. People enter traditional fields thinking it's what they're supposed to do. "This is the kind of job my parents did." "This is the kind of job I learned about in school."  It's not until they're well into that they realize they're actually unhappy.  They realize they need something more fulfilling in their life, and hope that one day they'll find the career of their dreams.  One day they'll do what they are truly meant to do.  I'm here to tell you that 'one day" comes when today becomes that day.

Living in a job that you despise is a terrible way to spend your time, you deserve better.  Think about the length of time that is, 8 hours and day, 5 days a week, (with 2 weeks vacation, weekends and holidays) that's 245 days a year and approx. 2000 hours a year.  That's a lot of life to spend miserable.  Relationships, friendships and health will be negatively affected if you continue down this path.

I bet there are thousands of careers that you've never even heard of. Take my friend's aunt for example; she actually tests the scent of deodorant when applied to skin different types for a living. Imagine that job! Apparently someone wants to do it.  Think about the people who make mock laundry detergent boxes for commercials so they look better and brighter than the real box.  Someone puts his/her passion into enhancing our TV sales experience.

The trick is to find the industry, activity, culture, or service you really find interesting and then search for information and the activities that make it happen.  Who sells it, makes, it, writes about it, regulates it, moves it, changes it, uses it, builds it, breaks it and so on.

 Start your information search:

  1. Talk to people and ask them questions about what they do. (people love to talk about themselves, offer to buy them a Starbucks)
  • - What is it that you do and how do you like it?
  • - What made you decide to start in this area?
  • - What lines of career paths can this lead to?
  • - How has it changed and how do you see it evolving further?
  • - What obstacles are in the way?
  • - How is the competition managing?

The more questions you ask as many different people as you can, the faster you will uncover new ideas and possibilities of what you want to do.  Never underestimate asking people you have known for a while. You never know, people can surprise you with what they know.
