Career expert Thomas Pretty looks at travel recruitment and how candidates can enjoy their working life abroad.
The travel industry is in a constant state of recruitment in order to fill various positions during on and off season periods. The great thing about the industry is that there are jobs for all manner of workers who are able to make tourists feel more at home. For instance plumbers, electricians or chefs are all heavily required when the travel industry undergoes recruitment drives. This is a great opportunity for those who like to travel and work abroad and have a glorious life in the sun whilst having the money to enjoy the pursuits of tourists.
Recruitment in the travel industry spans a wide variety of sectors, for workers however it may mean taking a pay cut in order to have the pleasure of working abroad. The pay cut is usually worthwhile however due to the fact that often the cost of living is reduced abroad. Working abroad can also look great upon a CV and those just starting out in their careers may want to do a stint of working abroad in order to gain vital experience. After all, a well travelled candidate is far more appealing to recruitment agencies on your return to the UK.
If you already work in the hospitality industry you are a prime candidate for travel recruitment. Having the attributes to accommodate people and make them feel welcome are skills that the travel industry highly regards. Jobs roles such as bar workers, waiting staff as well as hotel workers are always in great need in the travel industry; if you are in one of these jobs roles already you may well wish to consider travelling abroad and working in sunnier climbs.
It is not just the summer holiday market that requires extensive periods of recruitment. With winter holidays becoming evermore popular, ski resorts are heavily relying upon foreign workers to meet their staffing needs. If you can ski or snowboard to an expert level you may wish to consider instruction on the slopes. Added to instruction jobs, the travel industry also recruits many apres-ski workers in the bars and hotels to make guests' stays more comfortable. If you enjoy winter sports and do not mind working for a living, doing a season in a ski resort is an ideal way of getting plenty of time on the piste and earning a little money while you are there.
The travel industry also undergoes recruitment for holiday reps regularly. While these jobs can be stressful there is a lot of fun to be had. Holiday companies that focus upon younger travellers include attributes such as energy, and sense of fun in their recruitment processes; so if you like a party you may well want to enter this kind of job.
Although there is fun there is also a serious side to these kinds of jobs, responsibility is key for two reasons. Firstly because as a holiday rep you are responsible for a large group of people and secondly because you must represent the travel company at all times to ensure their standards of behaviour and service are met.
If you possess a specialist skill you may also be eligible for recruitment in the travel industry. Instructors in a wide variety of activities such as diving, waterskiing and horse riding are all required regularly and means that instructors can do something they love, in beautiful surroundings and still get paid for it. Once again there is an element of responsibility as at all times you are in charge of a group of people and their safety should always be your paramount concern.
The reason the travel industry needs so many people from England is mainly due to the language barrier. Tourists like to have English speaking guides and instructors so they can get the best from their experiences.
If you want to be even more eligible for recruitment in the travel industry it is worth becoming bi-lingual as this will allow you to converse with tourists and locals alike. Having another language is a highly valuable asset to those who work in travel. If you think you can ensure people get the best from their holidays and would like to work in the sun, or the snow, the travel industry could well be perfect for you.
