Tips for Getting Journalism Jobs

Are you looking for a journalism job? I know it is asking for too much. But don’t get upset. Starting your career as a journalist is not that difficult. With proper planning and little patience you can get a journalism job easily. Before applying for a vacancy remember that even the smallest news organizing are failing to manage the number of resumes they are receiving.

If you are one of the applicants seeking job in any news organization you have to be well educated, qualified and experienced. Gone are the days when news organizations used to hire people with a college degree. A great resume works no more. In this industry it is experience that matters. You need to prove that you are efficient and can meet deadlines even under pressure.

Are you wondering how to get your foot in the door? Here are a few helpful tips for those looking for journalism jobs.

  1. Experience is must as employers are least interested in training fresher. If you have written for your college newspaper, include that in your resume. It is even better if you have worked as an intern at a professional newspaper. You should know about the five ‘W’s and one ‘H’ before facing an interview.
  2. Having a journalism degree is not enough. An advanced degree is better. Accomplishing a degree in related fields is even more appreciable. Employers always prefer reporters with law degrees. In fact at times they are overpaid than other reporters.
  3. People often do the mistake of overlooking the importance of extra curricular activities in their resume. But if you expertise in a particular field, highlight it. Employers like to have reporters who have some kind of expertise in sports and entertainment.
  4. Don’t expect to get a huge amount as a beginner. Be prepared to start small. Internship is very important for people willing to become journalists. Don’t hesitate to work for free because experience counts in this field. Though nobody prefers working in a weekly you can give it a second thought. You can later move to a daily.
  5. If you don’t get a full time or part time job to get started try to find out news organizations requiring freelancers. It is a good way to gain industry experience.
  6. The secret behind successful career movement is networking. Keep in touch with friends who are sharing this profession. Also maintain contact with the editor who oversaw your internship. Stay current with the faculty member who knows journalists. This way you may come to know about jobs before they are posted.
  7. Being computer savvy is very important. Web-oriented content is always preferred by the editor. If you can present slide show, put up digital photo or create blogs without guidance your value will go up automatically.
  8. The last but not the least. Be presentable. Choose business attire for going for an interview. Employers undoubtedly look for well behaved, disciplined and smart employees.

Follow the above written guidance to find jobs in journalism with ease.
