Tips On How To Strike The Work-Home-Certification Balance

Posted: Feb 04, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Finding the work-life balance is increasingly getting harder, with employers asking more and more of staff, and employee's priorities changing. These days its easy to become a ‘workaholic', not only because of the demands placed upon us, but the increasing prominence of work culture in our lives. Increasing demands such as work loads and certification can alter the work-home life balance, making you feel stressed out, guilty and with less energy.

Henry Cloud, consultant and psychologist states the problem is our lack of defining line between personal life and work life. After all these days you are likely to take your work home with you. It's also the fact that we prioritise our work over vital relationships and personal, simply because they are considered as ‘urgent'. Thus when we prioritise in this manner, we forget the important things, and thus our personal lives begin to suffer and so does then our energy. Cloud states from evidence that a more successful and happier worker is likely to know how to put their energy to both, achieving a better work-life balance and possibly better results in the work place. Here's a few tips on how to strike a better work-life balance…

Boundaries between home and work are the most difficult to set for ‘workaholics'. But to know where to set them will help you put energy to both aspects of your life. Turn your phone off during dinner with your family, on vacations and at weekends when you are doing things with your family. Check your emails during the commute or just before you leave work, so you don't end up checking emails instead of spending valuable time with your family. Having these boundaries is important, as it will decrease feelings of incessant guilt that you're ‘not working' or ‘not spending enough time with the family'.

It is also important to have 'me' time to collect your thoughts. It will ease the pressure of home and work life, if you simply have time to reflect. You could just have a short period of doing nothing, go on a walk and join an exercise or relaxation class, either during the work period or out of work hours. Time to your self is very important as it gives you time to reflect on your future, your work and home life, as well as other things going on in the present.

If you feel you are easily swayed by work, try to get into a routine whereby you can develop a better work-life balance. Stick to the routine and you should be able to naturally strike a better balance between work and your personal life. For instance, if your work requires you to study in your spare time for certification, it may be better to choose a more flexible option such as self-study or computer based training. This way you'll only need to set aside time two to three times a week for an hour or so (so that it does not interfere with your home life) and you can still be in the house when needed. Also that way you'll never feel guilty for not studying for work, nor for not spending time at home.

Routine is key in striking that balance, as it will help you regulate your life. Its important to do things that you want and like to do, as well as what you have to do. Keeping a routine is about prioritising these correctly.
