Understanding The Electrician Trade

Electricians are, simply, those individuals trained to design, construct, and work with electrical systems. These professionals even serve as specialists within the field of electronics. Some examples would be construction or building electricians, appliance electricians, and radio electricians. In many cases, electricians and electrical engineers are strongly associated.


Electricians: Terminology

In contrast to "outside lineman" who work for a utility company and perform service on phone or electrical lines outside, electricians are frequently referred to "Inside Wiremen" because they (construction/ building electricians) focus on interior electrical systems.

The term "electrician" is also applied to stagehands that specialize on the lighting of a show. These specialists, however, are not trained or licensed in the electrical vocation and have distinctively different skills than those who are. Therefore, whether completely or partially accurate, the term "electrician" is usually applied to anyone who works with wired mechanisms or systems.


Electricians: Training and Regulations of Trade

For those electricians trained in the electrical trade, training and regulations serve as a necessary foundation for a solid career. Trained electricians start a 3-to-5-year apprenticeship under the direct guidance of a Journeyman Electrician who, in turn, falls under the supervision of a Master Electrician. Education consists of Electrical Theory and Electrical Building Codes. Training under the Journeyman entails all phases of electrical installation, multiple construction styles, the dynamics of electrical performance, and the maintenance of all equipment.

Master Electricians, on the other hand, serve as a Journeyman first and have at least two years experience beyond that of a Journeyman. These electricians have knowledge of layout and estimation as well as design of electrical networking.


Electricians: Licensing

All trained electricians are required to acquire a permanent license with a specialization in at least some important area of electronic systems, such as low-voltage current-carrying conductors, high-voltage main connections, or homeowner electrical systems. Whatever the case, work is subject to regulatory inspection under the articles of the US National Electrical Code or the UK IEE Wiring Regulations (for British electricians).

Electricians have their hand on the pulse of the world's power. Without them, modern-day societies couldn't survive. Electrical networks that power large and vital systems rely on electrician know-how. Therefore, it's very important that electricians be very well-trained in their craft.
