In order to make a career in warehousing, you don't need a college degree, unless you want to enter the management sector. So, it is easy to start early and craft a career in the field of warehousing.
Qualifications
Due to high turnover rates, a number of openings are expected in the warehousing industry. This is basically because the jobs in this field do not demand high qualifications or even rigorous training. Though the wages are not extraordinary, (sometimes even low) it is considered to be a good option for people who want to get a job fast. Mostly employers require only a high school diploma or GED.
However, some jobs, like forklift operators, need to have proper training and special certifications. They learn how to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently. As it demands physical stamina, many employers conduct tests to check if candidates are fit for a warehousing job.
If an individual wants to work in a government company, or a facility that works on a contract basis for the federal government, then they may need to take a test, which generally includes a background check and security clearance.
Employment in the Warehousing Industry
Warehousing offers a number of job opportunities. You can move crates and packages of materials from one location to the other. Depending upon your interests, you can also do inspection work for the materials that come into and leave the facility. You can also work as a hand packer or packager.
Packers are responsible for packing and wrapping materials for shipment to other sites. Employees working in the warehousing industry may be required to work outdoors even in the worst climatic conditions and at great heights. People employed in this industry, especially those working as manual labor need to be able to be on their feet for a long time and lift heavy objects.
Getting employment in the field of warehousing has become easier, and you can find jobs advertised in a number of places, including grocery stores, , chemical factories, construction related industries and several other factories or companies producing, processing or shipping any kind of products. More often than not, employees in the warehousing industry are located in a metropolitan area.
There are a number of ways that you can find jobs in the warehousing industry. Warehousing job openings are advertised frequently in the classified section of newspapers. Word of mouth and networking can also work wonders while searching for a warehousing position.
Work Schedules
Most employees work on an average of 40 hours per week and sometimes overtime. Though the workweek is considered to be standard, the warehousing industry is open to working in shifts.
If you have just graduated from high school, are looking for a second job or just need to make extra money to help make ends meet, then give the warehousing industry a try.
