If you are looking to be come an electrician or conduct home repairs involving electricity you will need some training. Playing with electricity when you do not fully understand how it works is dangerous and can even be deadly. There is nothing magical about electricity, working with it is relatively simple and safe if you understand how it works and the best way to do that is to take electrical courses. Before attempting to work with electricity make sure you understand how to work with it safely.
There are numerous electrical courses available to you and many different avenues that you can turn to find courses. You can find electrical courses on the Internet, you can turn to your local community college, you can find trade schools that provide training. The first step in deciding to take electrical courses is to figure out why you want to take them. Are you looking to become an electrician? Do you just want to understand how electricity work? Do you want to be able to make home repairs or add some service to your home? Maybe you are adding a garage and wish to be able to install the electrical work yourself. There are any number of reasons why you might want to take electrical courses and the reason makes a difference in what courses you consider.
If you are looking to become an electrician you will need to become licensed. To become licensed you will need to understand and pass a test that is based on the NEC. The NEC is the National Eclectic Code and is the industry standard for safely implementing electrical work in a wide variety of situations and circumstances. The NEC is the code for calculating load and what capacities are safe under what situations. The NEC is the basis foremost city, county and state electrical codes .
If you are looking to safely and competently make home repairs you are looking to take a different set electrical courses than an electrician would need to. There are many excellent guides and references but good electrical courses will teach you hands on and allow you to ask questions about concepts or special circumstances you might have. Many home centers offer basic electrical courses that teach about electrical safety and how to work with electricity safely. Check with your local home center to see what they offer. If they do not offer any courses they will have some recommendations about where you can find beginner electrical courses.
Your local community college is another excellent resource for electrical courses. They will offer courses that are for the beginner and homeowner as well as courses that are designed for those that are looking to become an electrician. Manny states also offer programs that will discount the price of the course dramatically. Check in to what electrical courses are offered by your community college.
Trade schools also offer electrical courses. These course will be very specific and will likely be short, days rather than weeks or months. These course might be geared more to wards the electrician than the home owner but depending on what the local trade schools offer might just be perfect for what you are looking to do.
Remember, electrify can kill you, do not play around with it. Spend a little time learning how to work with it safely and then go apply what you have learned!
