Are You Ready For Driving In Europe?

Can you remember how nervous you felt when you first started to learn how to drive?

It’s a landmark moment in anyone’s life. Equally momentous is the moment you decide to drive to a ferry terminal, go on a crossing and then come off on the continent, ready to drive on the other side of the road for the first time.

It might not seem too difficult when you first think about it. After all, everything is pretty much the same – you are just driving on the right instead of the left.

It can, however, be confusing because all your instincts and reactions are geared up to driving on the left hand side of the road and unfortunately you can’t really practice before you get there either!

Obviously it pays to be alert and to know where you should be heading before you have to start driving. For example, let’s suppose your ferry is taking you to Calais, and from there you have to drive to Amiens. Do you know which signs you need to look out for and which roads you will need to take to begin with?

Things are slightly easier if you have a passenger with you who can read maps. Safety is most important so regardless of whether you are alone or not focus only on the first part of the journey. You can always stop when you need to.

This is an even more important point to remember in Europe than it is in this country. It is essential to stop if you are feeling tired, and you are more likely to feel overwhelmed and tired more quickly if you are not used to driving on the right.

On a more practical note, make sure you have all the relevant documents with you as well. If you do run into problems or you are stopped for any reason, you will need to be able to present them when asked for them. Other items you would do well to pack in your car are a warning triangle and a first aid kit. Hopefully you will never need them but you should carry them just in case.

Of course, driving abroad is something that not everyone does. This is why you will need to check your insurance before you travel, to make absolutely sure you are covered to drive in Europe. Get some car insurance quotes from several companies to see who will cover you for this requirement.

Driving in Europe can be an exciting experience. It is certainly not for the faint hearted though, and if you can have someone else with you to share the driving with, it will be much easier in the long run, no matter where you are going.
