Atlantic Toyota and Huntington Toyota customers may have heard about the recent investigation into Toyota Motor Corp's electronic throttle systems. This system was thought to be possibly the cause of accidents preceding Toyota's major recalls in 2009.
There was a combination of problems that caused the accidents that led to the eventual recall of nearly 8 million vehicles across the U.S. which included eight different models like the RAV4 and Highlander. The other issues were pedals getting trapped by the floor mats that had not been completely tailored for the vehicles as well as accelerator pedals that took too much time returning to their idle positions.
NHTSA wanted to confirm that the electronic throttle was not the cause of the malfunctions and with the help of NASA, they were able to confirm that there was nothing wrong with the system. It took 10 months of research to confirm that Toyota's systems were designed properly.
Steve St. Angelo, Toyota's Chief Quality Officer for North America, said as a response to the NHTSA study:
"Toyota welcomes the findings of NASA and NHTSA regarding our Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i) and we appreciate the thoroughness of their review. We believe this rigorous scientific analysis by some of America's foremost engineers should further reinforce confidence in the safety of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. We hope this important study will help put to rest unsupported speculation about Toyota's ETCS-i, which is well-designed and well-tested to ensure that a real world, un-commanded acceleration of the vehicle cannot occur."
