Jim has been a manager in the auto glass business since 2003.
A question I am asked every day is “What is your warranty”? My warranty is pretty simple, and is the industry standard: We cover our workmanship for as long as you own your car. We have honored the warranty as much as five years after the job was done.
FAQs
Does your warranty include the glass? It depends. If the glass was installed in the last two or three days, and it cracked, then call us. If the glass was installed more than a few weeks ago, and the glass is cracked, then it is not covered. You see, if there is a manufacturer’s defect which will cause the glass to crack, or an installation error, then it will show up in the first few days, and never longer than a week. After that, cracks are mostly due to a rock chip.
Does your warranty include leaks, gaps, or air leaks? Sure does.
How do I get work done under your warranty? Call the shop you worked with to set the appointment. You will need a copy of your invoice; if you can’t find it, then please tell me the date we did the work. I can’t look for “about two or three months ago”, I need an exact day, or a span of just a few days.
My door window came off track. Really, there is no longer a “track” for the glass to fall off. It is now a “regulator”, which is a mechanism with a lot of parts in it. Generally, if we replaced the door window within the last few weeks, we will look at it to see if our installation caused this. Generally, however, the regulator malfunction is not due to our workmanship; when the door window was broken it stressed the regulator, and the regulator just broke, especially if the vehicle is more than a year or two old. The carmakers do not sell parts for regulators; you have to replace the entire regulator. For price and availability, call the shop you worked with.
What causes the rearview mirror to fall off the windshield? I have had a few people claim we installed the rearview mirror so badly it fell off the windshield. This is usually due to hanging a lot of things on the rearview mirror. This is the case when part of the windshield falls off with the mirror. In only one case in the last 5 years was it due to a manufacturer’s defect; they didn’t put enough glue on it!
