Unlike any other parts transmission is very complex and due its complexity if you are not auto mechanic this part is difficult to diagnose and understand when a problem occurs. There are two types of transmission the manual and the automatic transmission both can develop problems similar in symptoms but the cause of the problem is different. One of the transmission problems that may occur with automatic transmission is when the gear shift won't work. If this problem happens to your car it causes your car to stall.

There are plenty of reasons why this problem occurs on the automatic transmission and the worst scenario is that the transmission is damage. Insufficient amount of transmission fluid can also cause the automatic transmission gears from working properly and this is not a serious problem however if for instance after checking the transmission fluid level and you found that there is sufficient amount of fluid but still the automatic transmission gears won't work then the problem can either of the two, a bad fluid pump or a gear selector linkage problem and that is not good. When the transmission has bad fluid pump the hydraulic fluid will not be pump inside the transmission and can cause the transmission to not work properly, likewise when the gear selector linkage has problem the automatic transmission shift gear will not work also, in both cases the transmission has to be open to find out which of the two is the real cause of the problem. Only professional can examined and determined the culprit, it is important that the transmission is open up and this kind of job will cost you a lot.

When this problem happened to your car no other option but to bring the car to the car shop and have the transmission inspected by a professional to determine the exact cause of the problem. You are lucky if the problem is just an insufficient amount of fluid because this is not serious and will not cost you a lot. All you have to do is to pour in sufficient amount of fluid to make the transmission works and no need to open the transmission.
