BMW "No Reverse" Transmission Problem

An automatic transmission is just that- automatic, consequently most people tend to pay very little attention to it until a major problem rears its ugly head.

Picture the scenario- you are driving along in the lap of luxury, the satellite radio blaring and the heated seats on. You have become accustomed to the comfort level and great driving experience brought to you by BMW.

You decide to stop at the local convenience store on your way home to grab some ice cream for the kids and a bottle of water for yourself. Upon returning to your car, you start it up, check your rear view mirror, put the shifter in reverse and then the unthinkable happens- the engine just revs as if it is in neutral and the car goes nowhere!

This article deals with the reasons behind an unexpected loss of reverse in certain BMW automatic transmission equipped vehicles, specifically the 3 series and 5 series vehicles that use the ZF5HP19 or steptronic transmission. This includes the popular 323i, 323ci, 325i, 328i, 330i, 525i, 528i, 530i, X3 and X5 models well as some others built in the 1999 to present model years.

To eliminate confusion, this does not apply to vehicles equipped with the GM 5L40 E transmission, just the ones with the sometimes problematic ZF5HP19. The 5L40 E has some issues of its own that are beyond the scope of this article but are certainly going to be the subject of another.

The failure rate for these transmissions seems to be very high and is expected to become much more of a problem as time goes by.

Typically, the vehicle is working perfectly while driving forward but when it is put in reverse there is a complete and permanent loss of movement to back up.

Reverse is typically a major feat for any transmission to accomplish- imagine the demands that are placed on a gearbox as it is asked to reverse the torque of your engine so that you can back up your nearly 4000 pound vehicle.

By far, the most common cause of the reverse problem in BMW's is the failure of the D-G clutch drum. Specifically, the snap ring that retains the D or reverse clutch breaks out of the clutch drum resulting in an inability for the clutch pack to apply.

The good news is that there is hope in regards to a proper repair. The factory has released an updated part that so far appears to be a permanent fix for this problem.

In our testing and in conjunction with several hundred successful repairs at our facilities, the new part seems to be metallurgically superior in several ways.

We have found that there is an improved radius area as well as slightly thicker casting. In addition to this, the grove that retains the snap ring is also relocated further away from the edge of the drum.

With this issue addressed and attention to detail in several other areas of the ZF5HP19 unit, the transmission can be repaired to "better than new" condition by a competent transmission rebuilder / remanufacturer. In fact, when properly repaired, the ZF gearbox becomes quite robust and can provide an almost indefinite service life.

There is a recent class action settlement for problems associated with this transmission problem. See: http://productliability.law360.com/articles/71185

I have a 1997 740IL the transmission does not make a sound but it just will not reverse I`m thinking that it just might be a sensor. What do you think? I don`t want to take it to a mechanic just yet, Because I know it it can be very costly. Is there a website where I can find a diagram of the transmission. I will appreciate any info.

This article is very good. It answers many questions one may have when trying to decide what to do with there car in this situation. Many people with lower mileage cars still get talked into a full rebuild that is not necessary. Nice to see someone out there trying to get info to the public. If you are interested there are pictures of the broken parts from a 5HP19 that cause the no reverse problem at http://www.dosebmw.com

I'm responding to your artical on the bmw zf5hp19 problem of the reverse drum breakage. I have performed this repair several times with great success. but this time I got burned. A 2001 bmw 330i came in with no reverse and great forwards and we sold our customer on the drum replacment repair. after inspecting the trans, we found nothing wrong. we rebuilt it with a new epc solenoid and the solenoid that prevents high speed reverse. went through the valve body and we still are having reverse problems. Reverse will engage and then instantly neutral out.
any ideas?

I have a 2000 BMW 323i that failed to go in reverse. Unfortunately, BMW does not own up to this defect despite many hundreds of documented complaints at Edmunds, noreverse.org and consumeraffairs.org. Because BMW (both the local dealership where I bought the car and BMW NA headquarters) would not admit to the problem and refused to help, I took my car to a transmission shop that fixed it for $2,800. I appreciate this article's advice. Only wish I had the benefit of it before overpaying for the repair.

I just had this happen to my car, a 2000 BMW 323i, 70k on it. A big clunk and no reverse. I had taken the car in several times for this noise and BMW said nothing was wrong. Estimate:$5590.00. Ridiculous. In doing research online, this seems to happen to all 2000 BMW 3 series at some point in its lifetime. I am demanding BMW pay for it, not sure how far I will get with that.

Brilliant article - explains exactly what happend to my beamer in South Africa. BMW agent would not repair only fix - a private BMW transmission specialist repaired it for me exactly as you documented for fraction of the cost. Just hope the repair lasts!!!

Wow, I just can't believe what I am reading all over the net! The reverse just went out on my 323i year 2000 BMW this past Sunday. I am sitting here carless not knowing what to do with estimates given to me all day today anywhere from $2200 to $4000. This is insane. There should be a class action suit against BMW. This article was great, I only wish I lived in New Jersey so I could bring my car to them!

Making a Used Cars For Sale Experience Good

By: Ira Benet | 03/07/2009
I remember when my best friend and I went to buy her first car. She’d been saving up for a car for months and had finally saved up enough money for a good down payment on a used car for sale and was really excited to get her first car. We went to a few of the local dealerships and got the same experience at every single one. Every time we got there the dealer would come out, look at us, and would immediately look for someone who was supposed to be with us. Granted we were only 20 years old, but

There are numerous ways to go about obtaining the costs of premiums from different insurers to start a comparison. One can simply do so by contacting an agent or a broker. The difference between the 2 is that agents work for and therefore represent a company whereas a broker will represent the buyer to the companies. Both are extraordinarily beneficial in explaining policies and helping to grasp needs.Due to the time involved in having to contact diverse firms, ag...
