Bumper Scratch Prep

Posted: Mar 17, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Preparing a bumper scratch before painting is one of the more important stages of repair. It involves removing all surface scratches, chips and blemishes creating a smooth surface for the paint to be applied. It is considered to be an important stage of a body repair for if it's done incorrectly you will notice a poor and inconsistent finish after the paint and lacquer is applied. Other problems that are a direct result of poor preparation work are flaking paint and rough surface finish. In this article I will provide basic knowledge and information on carrying out standard prep work on a bumper scratch/bumper scuff.

Clean the repair area

The first stage of prep work on a bumper scratch or scuff would be to clean the damaged area. This will remove any dirt, silicon and cru stations from the area that is to be painted. A good alcohol based cleaner should serfice. Once the area has been cleaned the next stage is to flatten of any rough edges of the scratch.

Flatten off scratches

Flatten of the bumper scratches with some wet and dry paper or sand paper equivalent to remove any loose or rough edges from the scratches.

Fill the scratch

Once the scratches have been smoothed off mix some filler with some hardener and push the mixture into the bumper scratches with a razor blade, and leave to dry. Mask up around all sections that you don't want sprayed with tape and newspaper. Once the filler mixture has dried rub back with some course wet and dry paper until the filler is level with the surface. Next apply some primer to the area (either with a HVLP gun or spray can) and leave to dry. Once dried rub back again with some medium wet and dry paper until level with the surface, this will help fill in all those smaller scratches and chips. Repeat the application of primer until all minor scratches are filled and smooth to the surface. Dry off the repair and use an fine abrasive scotching pad and gently rough up the area that is to be sprayed, this will help adhere the paint to the repair.

Prepare for spraying

Finally use a tack rag or tack cloth to remove any remaining pieces of lint, dust or residue to prepare the prepped surface for painting.

Finally

Make sure you read all instructions of the products that you use and wear the appropriate protective items that they require.
