Can You Afford To Buy A Car?

We would all like to buy a brand new car straight off the forecourt, gleaming and untouched by anyone else before we got behind the wheel.

Most people realise that this dream isn’t too practical when you translate it into real life. Apart from new cars being extremely expensive, they lose their value very quickly too.

But even when it comes to buying second hand, you need to make sure you have thought about financing your purchase before you take action. There are several ways you can do this, which is why it is worth finding out as much as you can before you buy the car you want.

A lot of people buy their cars with cash. This means you will need to have the money saved up in advance, so you can simply pay for your car and drive it away. The advantage of this form of payment is that you don’t have to worry about any additional charges for interest.

If this is the way you are going to do it, then you will need to think about what you have in the way of savings right now. If you don’t have enough to pay for the car you want, you have a couple of options open to you. You might find you can buy a cheaper car than the one you had your eye on.

Alternatively you need to ask yourself whether you could wait for a while longer before buying your next car. If you need it desperately – perhaps to get you to and from work for example – then you might have to think about borrowing the extra cash you need.

On the subject of borrowing some cash, some people use their credit cards to finance a quick car purchase. But this is rarely the best way to do it, owing to the steep rates that are often applied.

The only possible solution would be to get a card which offers 0% on purchases for six or nine months. In this case you would need to be strict enough to create a repayment plan for yourself, so you pay back the whole balance before interest starts being charged.

But perhaps the most common option that many people choose is to get a car loan. These can be arranged with a car dealer directly in many cases, but they are also available from banks and building societies.

Of course once you know how you are going to pay for the car there are other ongoing costs to think about as well. The best example is insurance. You should see which of the car insurance groups your chosen vehicle falls into, and account for the cost of that and other running costs as well.

In short, you can see that planning ahead is a big step in the right direction to planning your car purchase effectively.
