LED or Light Emitting Diodes which is found on almost electronic device such as digital clocks, television, flashlights, road signs and traffic light is increasingly becoming popular in many emergency vehicles today. Although the origin of strobe lighting dates back to 1931 it is just at the present moment that its usage is fast dominating the automobile market. Technically speaking car LED bulb is extremely small semiconductor diodes that fit easily into an electrical circuit.

Unlike traditional bulbs it contains no filament but creates light using the movement of electricity along the path of the semiconductor. A diode as a special type of semiconductor gives off light when electricity passes through it during the transit of the p-n junction known as the terminals. As the electrons make a transition between the positive and negative sides they give off a photon of the light through a process called electroluminescence.

In addition automobiles involved in many risky situations such as a police cars, an ambulance and fire trucks are recently seen with this type of bulbs. Its popularity is rooted to its many benefits including energy efficiency and low power usage which is an obvious advantage over the strobe light of the 30s. LED headlamp bulbs typically last for 100, 000 hours whereas traditional incandescent bulb stays only for 750 hours or so.  In terms of power usage one LED bulb consumes 78, 000 KWH over a 60, 000 hour time period while incandescent lights consume 36, 000, 000 KWH.

Replacing the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) car bulbs on a vehicle and switching it into a LED headlight bulbs make emergency hazard lights and signals last longer and more energy efficient. During vital situations such as long miles of nighttime driving, poor visibility during bad weather conditions and awful traffic congestion LED technology emit bright glowing light that aid in direction-finding and easy distinction from a distance.

More than the basic illumination function, color variation conveys a message or meaning. Common insignia include yellow lights representing alphanumeric display in the environment where night vision must be maintained. Green lights viewed as courtesy lights or beacon lights for stationary vehicles. Blue and red lights reserved to state emergency and law enforcement vehicles to denote risk-to-life situations and urgent control of circumstances. Furthermore the colors of headlight bulbs are set by the state law and some considerations in many jurisdictions elsewhere.

Standardization of the car LED bulb colors and its connotation largely depend on the specification per country and state. With such advance in accumulation of hues these lights also come in diverse shapes and sizes to meet different automotive requirements for each type of fitting. While color samples are mostly limited to authorities, individuals and private entities are free to purchase the item as long as the vehicle owner has the right to own and operate according to road legal rights.
