Car Recalls Update: 245,000 Toyota Vehicles Recalled in North America; 1.7 Million Worldwide
DETROIT, M.I. – Car recalls for Toyota have already begun this year as 245,000 vehicles are being recalled across North America and about another 1.5 million in Japan and Europe. Late 2009 saw recalls for defective floor mats and gas pedals that were getting stuck while 2010 included issues with possible brake and fuel systems.

For over a year, Toyota has been working on regaining the loyalty of its customers and owners as the more recent recalls had caused some damage to its image. Sales decreased in 2010, ending with Toyota having a 5.5 percent decline from the same time in 2009. Due to this decrease in sales, General Motors was close to regaining its Best-Selling Automaker;Toyota claimed it in 2008 after General Motors had held the spot for almost 80 years.
The car recalls being conducted include two separate problems, one with defective fuel pipes and the other with high-pressure fuel pump.
The cars affected are as follows:
Faulty Fuel Pipes
- Japan - 1.2 million vehicles: RAV4, Noah, Voxy
- Europe - 141,000 vehicles: Avensis 2000-2008 models
High-Pressure Fuel Pump/Pressure Sensors
- North America - 245,000 vehicles: 2006-2007 Lexus GS300/350, 2006-early 2009 Lexus IS250 and 2006-early 2008 Lexus IS350
- Japan - 75,000 vehicles: Crown, Mark X and Lexus 2007-2009
Although there are two different possible issues, they are both very close to the same problem. For the first, there is a design flaw that could cause cracks to appear in the pipes, which can cause a fuel leak. The second includes the pressure sensor that is attached to the engine fuel delivery pipe which may come loose causing the pressure to rise. If this happens, it will also cause a break in the pipe and a fuel leak.
Toyota is currently collecting the parts needed to correct the issues in both sets of car recalls. As soon as parts are obtained, Toyota will be sending out notices by mail to owners.
If owners have any questions they can visit their local dealerships and, if needed, have the gasket between the sensor and the delivery pipe replaced as well as the sensor tightened correctly.
