I have been an auto technician for 40 years and would like to share some of my knowledge. For more automotive information please visit my website at http://www.gunnysautotips.com/ and http://www.carhelpsites.com
There are many symptoms your car may exhibit that should be checked into quickly. These would include noises, odors, dash board warning lights and just plain "it doesn't feel or handle properly". In order to avoid large actual repairs and large repair bills these symptoms should never be ignored.
If you notice a dash warning light coming on take immediate action depending on which warning light it is. Never continue driving if the engine oil or brake lights come on. The engine oil light can ruin your engine. The brake light can ruin your life if the brakes are faulty or the fluid is very low.
Any brake related problems need to be dealt with immediately. It is never safe to attempt driving if the brakes are not functioning correctly. Have them inspected regularly, during your oil change if possible. If the brake linings are worn thin replace the pads/shoes before it becomes a hazard. If you don’t know how to do this, do not attempt to fix brakes yourself. It’s best to allow a trained technician to do this for you.
If the oil light comes on pull of the road immediately and shut the engine off. Check the oil level and add oil if necessary. Check under the vehicle for oil leaks if the level is low. Other than this a tow truck is much cheaper than a new engine. Have it towed to a repair shop.
Loud noises or serious shaking in the front end can be an indicator of all sorts of problems, from steering components to bad tires. Never ignore this or think it will correct itself. Issues left uncorrected will gradually get worse and may also be dangerous.
If your car stalls out at random, it’s time to get it looked at. Many things can cause a vehicle to stall but that is something you do not want to happen when pulling out into traffic. A stalled car can prove to be dangerous and a hazard to you and other drivers. If your car stalls or hesitates at random or upon start up, have it looked at.
If you smell gasoline it most likely will be related to the gas tank, gas lines or fuel injectors. These always need to be dealt with immediately by a professional. When it comes to gasoline, there is no room for guess work
Knowing your car is the key ingredient. If something doesn't feel, sound or smell right it is time for a repair. Taking care of automobile problems do cut into the budget somewhat but waiting until the problem gets worse will cut into the budget a whole lot more.
