Diplomats Owe Thousands In Fines
Parking fines are a bit of an annoyance for us in the UK, as they are expensive and often issued in areas where it is very unclear as to what the rules and regulations are. But new reports from the council for the City of Westminster say that nearly two thirds of the fines that are issued have not been paid, and the majority of these fines are from international diplomats who do not reside in the country.
One of the worst offending countries is Kazakhstan, with offences from diplomats totally over one thousand seven hundred unpaid fines, totalling nearly two hundred thousand pounds.
Sudan comes in second position, with a single diplomat racking up an amazing total of four hundred and seventy one tickets by himself, totalling over fifty thousand pounds.
Although diplomats are expected to obey the rules and laws of the country that are in, they are exempt from prosecution under a clause in the international law.
According to the council body in London there are over one hundred embassies with fines, including China and Saudi Arabia which are some of the repeat offenders.
All motorists who break traffic rules should be subject to the same penalties, regardless of their citizenship, nationality or job title," said Cllr Lee Rowley, the council's cabinet member for parking, "It's time these offending diplomats started to respect the rules and regulations of the UK and pay their parking tickets like everyone else."
