Driving Safety – Must have safety features in your car

Posted: Jan 18, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

When you take a car on the road you are responsible for handling something that weighs atleast two tons and can cause great harm to you and others on the road if it loses control. Modern cars keep coming out with newer innovations in car safety to reduce potential risks and enhance driving safety. Whether you're in the market to buy a car, or simply want to upgrade your present one, make sure you are aware of the latest driving safety features available and try to make the most of them.

Here are some of the popular ones:

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) – A crucial driving safety feature, the ESC has been known to avert the risk of a fall over crash by almost 80%, by improving rollover assistance and aiding braking and emergency handling techniques. The ESC comes in so many different versions but its main function is to put the car back on the road in the intended line of travel by automatically taking over when the car loses control at high speeds, averting potential disasters. The Rollover Protection System quickly jumps in to bring the car into control if you swerve too sharply, or cut a corner at a high speed and risk rolling over your vehicle. Adaptive Cruise Control or Distronic systems go a step ahead than just stabilizing speeds; they are enabled to adjust the brake and throttle to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead during changes in speed of traffic and the radar and sensors brake hard and tighten the seatbelts accordingly to increase driving safety, if they sense a potential collision. Once the traffic stabilizes they restore the car to its original speed, automatically without any inputs from you. Fatal crashes potentially reduce by almost 50% with the installation of an ESC system in a car.

Tire pressure monitoring: NHTSA has made it mandatory for all vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds to have a tire-pressure monitoring system where there are sensors located at the wheels, which alert you in case the tire pressure is too low. Then there are run-flat tires, which allow you to drive at speeds above 50 miles despite lower pressure. Most accidents on highways are caused by tire bursts causing a speeding car to veer out of control, so such features greatly help long distance driving safety.

Rear view Cameras, Night vision Assistance and Adaptive Headlights – The idea is to help you see greater distances at night, broaden your vision range to almost a 1000 feet away so that you can be aware of objects in the path of your car. Modern driving safety features in this respect include infra-red headlamps and thermal imaging cameras where objects which are not clearly visible are shown on the cockpit display in the form of images. Rear view vision in the form of tilting side mirrors cameras have now made way for rear view cameras that work with your navigation system to give you a wide angled shot of the objects/activity behind your car. It's a great driving safety feature, not just for your car but also for the unsuspecting children or little animals that are often out of the driver's sight behind cars.

Sensitive Airbags/ Sophisticated seats and seat belts which work in tandem- As against a single air bag and seatbelts only for the driver's seat, till some time back; modern cars have more sophisticated engineering and comprehensive driving safety features like multiple airbags, seat belts, ergonomic seat designs, everything designed to be used in combination, so that in the event of a crash, the people inside the car do not "submarine" under the airbags. The latest in the market are occupant-sensitive airbags which sense the size of the passenger, any abnormal seating position, the angle of the seat belt, the speed of the vehicles and even rear facing seats and deploy accordingly. Atleast 31 states have mandatory seat belt rules. Automatic Airbags have been known to halve crash mortality rates and that's why even car insurance companies encourage their use by giving you discounts on installing them in your car. According to the NHTSA, almost 27,840 lives have been saved by frontal airbags between 1997 and 2007.

Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS) - This is one among the many emergency response systems in the markets today that shut off fuel, unlock doors, and switch on interior lights if the airbags happen to deploy. Another such system alerts the response center about the accident and is equipped to make accident details available to the emergency personnel. Still another disconnects the battery terminal from the alternator in case of an accident. The idea is to help you make a safe exit from the car and alert help teams as quickly as possible.

Newer safety innovations are being rolled out by car manufacturers by the day; so next time you are in the market for a car, strongly consider buying one as much for its driving safety features as its awesome looks or low on road maintenance.
