Evolution of Hand Crank to Remote Key

Do you know that the Benz Patent-Motorwagen is widely regarded as the first automobile ever invented? Karl Benz, a German engine designer, designed and constructed what is now widely regarded as the world's first automobile, and unveiled it to the public on July 3, 1886 in Mannheim, Germany. It had a single cylinder four-stroke engine capable of .9 horsepower at 400 revolutions per minute. To start it, it had no ignition key or ignition button like modern cars today. The people of 1886 had none of these. Instead, they had the wooden hand crank. This is a far cry from the modern convenience of using a metal or remote key to start your car; however, as car locksmith San Diego professionals point out, we wouldn't have these conveniences if their earlier versions weren't invented.

There are over one million drivers in the city of San Diego, and every one of those drivers has to give credit to Karl Benz, and how he integrated the first ignition system with the first automobile. Hand cranks were an effective, if crude, way of starting the automobile, and from its use sprang its more modern variations, like the metal key and the high-tech remote key.

Car locksmith San Diego experts note that the hand crank was also dangerous to use. To start the Motorwagen (and pretty much all cars of the era), you had to insert it into the crank hole and turn it until it could give enough momentum and power the engine needed to start. When the engine did get started, it would turn the crank along with it, with such speed and force that it would hit the driver's hand. This left many drivers with broken wrists and arms.

Today though, from the lessons learned with the hand crank, engineers have come up with more state-of-the-art solutions. After the hand crank came the metal ignition key (which car locksmith San Diego specialists are expert with) that is still widely popular today. The crank hole was also replaced with the much more efficient and safe ignition switch, which was relocated to the side of the steering wheel, allowing for more easy access. There are also more high-tech ignition keys that succeeded the hand crank, one of which is the remote key. Remote keys enable a driver to do things like start his car and unlock his doors from a distance. This is done through radio wave signals, which can be transmitted by the key to the car. This enables a driver to control its features from a distance, all with the press of a button.
