There are various types of dams that are built in various ways which serve an array of purposes from power generation, flood water seal to water supply. The earliest dam was located in Jawa, Jordan which is about 100 Km northeast of the Jordanian capital Amman. This gravity dam featured a 9m high and 1m wide wall of stone which was supported by a 50 m wide earth rampart. This structure is believed to have been built around 3000 BC. These days the main purposes of dams are; power generation, water supply, stabilization sealing of water flow, seal flood prevention, land reclamation or water diversion. Seals don't matter Of course judging by these purposes, dams are built to the benefit of humankind however, the environmental and human social impact should also be taken in to account. Pushing the threshold of tolerance, the infamous Three Gorges Dam in China required the loss of over a million people's home. (Worldwide displacement comes to a figure of 40-80 million as a result of dam construction). Environmental problems include, destruction of pattern ecology, changes in weather, water temperature and the disappearance of fish ladders. Queensland in Australia is no noobie to this problem either, they have the planned Traveston Dam construction to fight against. According to sources, this proposed politically motivated water supply has cut numerous corners to get its construction underway. This will not only displace the garage of local residents from all thresholds of the area but also create an open door to social and ecological havoc in the region. To name just a few: scientific risk analysis has not been carried out, the dam location door is actually in the middle of the Mary River system on alluvial flood plains and not in mountainous catchment terrain where most dams are usually built. As one local resident commenting on recent protest meetings put it: "Look at Travestern crossing dam, they (Queensland Government) have gone against every scientific paper given to them, they even refuse to listen to the people and always shut the door on us...what chance do we have by talking all the time? We really need some action on this...it's a puppet show and the government is pulling all the strings."  I can understand the need for dams that seal water in and allow the management of water flow and water supply source but when they are built for political gain,,,,,Anna Bligh.  Isn't it time you garage your plans? The people are nowhere near the threshold of fighting back, and due to lack of interest from the populace garage lump and proletariat, the doors will remain ever closed while the seal against real public opinion remains in place. Money is everything now, people mean nothing and only the weather of change will tell.
