Getting Out Of Speeding Tickets - Fact Or Fiction?

Posted: Mar 12, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

If you've been unlucky enough to be caught by a traffic camera then the idea of getting out of speeding tickets will probably have crossed your mind. After all, other people have managed to contest their speeding tickets and some of them have even managed to beat a speeding ticket. So, your mind asks whether it could be you?

We won't get into the arguments about speeding being bad, etc. That's another debate entirely.

We'll just stick with the question of getting out of speeding tickets.

There are a handful of possible defences against a speeding ticket. You could pay a lawyer to defend you but the chances are that it would be cheaper to pay the fine and take a hit on the points on your licence, always assuming that you haven't clocked up so many points already that this next set will tip you over the edge and lead to a ban on you driving.

For a first time speeding offence, there's a good chance that you'll be able to pay the fine and take a speed awareness course instead of getting the points. This would be a good option, not necessarily from the point of view of being lectured about how bad it is to speed, but more from the point of view of not getting points on your licence.

Of course, the speed awareness option won't be offered for subsequent offences as they'll think you should have learned your lesson by that stage.

So we're back to getting out of speeding tickets...

The old loophole of claiming you can't remember who was driving at the time - successfully used by Neil Hamilton and his wife - has long since been closed. But there are still ways to develop a kind of amnesia about who was or wasn't driving a particular vehicle. Research for these is outside the scope of this article. Plus I don't want to give the powers-that-be any ideas, otherwise they'd close the few remaining loopholes.

Questioning the accuracy of the camera has been known to work, especially if the relevant authority can't lay their hands on the certification or if, due to cutbacks or whatever, it's missed the due date for testing. So that's worth digging into as one of the possible ways of getting out of speeding tickets.

Getting a speeding ticket is never a good sign. Beating a speeding ticket is not an easy task but is a good way to avoid future problems. However, if the fine is not too much than one must consider paying the charges and get done with it. The speeding ticket officer has the right to cancel the ticket and in severe cases the right is handed over to the traffic courts where the accused has to fight with an attorney.
