Hooting the Horn

Posted: Mar 22, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

How often do you use your horn? Some drivers are guilty of tooting it all the time; to alert other drivers, to be cross or to make friends aware of their presence, while others see it as the big button in the centre of their steering wheel that rarely gets used.

But if research by AXAinsurance.com is anything to go by, it seems that road users are driven to distraction by the use of horns, so much that it is leading to a new campaign to stop drivers using their horns aggressively.

Have you ever thought about the mindset of the driver in front? Maybe it is an old man who is driving slowly as he is nervous or a lady dawdling because she has small children in her car? Don't get angry as you drive because it will only cause you to be annoyed, and fluster the other person, potentially causing an accident that could have been prevented.

The survey, conducted with two thousand participants, is part of a move to bring respect back to the roads and reduce the amount of road rage that is causing violence in the UK. Two thirds of road users are unaware that it is illegal to sound the horn when the car is stationary, and two out of five drivers feel stressed when they hear the horn being sounded. It is often when a person is driving with uncertainty, and so is often stressed anyway. The sound of the horn only adds to this confusion.

An AXA spokesperson said "Pressing horns out of frustration is just one of the ways people show a lack of respect on the road. By highlighting the discourteous way in which people act when driving, our ongoing campaign aims to bring respect back onto the roads and improve driving experience."

If you are driving on the roads in the UK then make sure that you have a Car Insurance policy as this is a legal requirement in the UK, as is road tax and a valid MOT certificate. Cheap car insurance policies can be purchased online to save pennies.
