Keep Your Tyres in Good Condition

Roadsafe are urging people to be careful this winter on the roads when it comes to braking. Independent research undertaken by MIRA (formerly the Motor Industry Research Association) has revealed that braking performance deteriorates considerably in wet conditions when your tyre tread is below 3mm in depth.

There is compelling accident evidence that motorists should check and change their tyres on a regular basis, as when the conditions are wet, good tyres could prevent a great deal of accidents.

"There has been a long-standing belief within the motoring industry that wet weather tyre performance deteriorates more rapidly as the tread depth wears away. A comprehensive test of different vehicles and tyre tread depths now scientifically confirms these claims," says MIRA's senior engineer, Simon Aldworth, who carried out the research into tyre wet grip performance at the organisation's headquarters in Nuneaton.

Their research was carried out on four separate vehicles; a family hatchback, an executive saloon car, a high performance saloon and an MPV to establish the different weights of cars to see if there was any change in this respect. It was found that all vehicles had twenty five percent less performance when the tyre was worn to under a 3mm tread, and the cars all risked higher chances of aquaplaning in the wet conditions.

It is advised that you check the tyre pressure every two weeks, when the tyre is cold to achieve an accurate result. You should check tyres for damage like cuts, cracks or bulges, as this can be a sign of a slow puncture or that there is the possibility for the tyre to blow out in the future. Make sure you also check the spare tyre in case you need to change one.
