MI Car Dealers, Drivers: Study to Determine Feasibility of Cell Phone Filter/Blocker Technologies
MI car dealers may remember U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood's push last year for a possible ban against the use of cell phones or hands-free technology while driving.
Though LaHood moved away from a definitive call against restrictions, his department is still moving ahead in research on not only cell phones and distracted driving, but how the new crop of infotainment systems such as Sync by Ford Motor Co. affect driving too.

According to The Detroit News, LaHood told reporters at an event in Yonkers, N.Y., "We're going to work on the cognitive part of this problem. We're doing a study. We base our solutions on data, and before I or anyone else gets up and starts talking about ‘hands-free this' or ‘hands-free that,' or Sync or whatever, we want to have good data to back it up."
The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) is also conducting a study. MI car dealers and drivers should know UMTRI has tapped a company called Cellcontrol to take part in the study.
According to Cellcontrol's website, Cellcontrol stops distracted driving. MI car dealers should know the technology detects when vehicles are in motion and manages cell phone operation based on a user's requirements. Users can set cell phone restrictions based on factors such as driving speed, time or Bluetooth presence or absence. The technology can also "whitelist" incoming calls such as those from parents or supervisors. Emergency calls of 9-1-1 are always permitted.
A press release issued by Cellcontrol stated the UMTRI study will last three months and examine two types of technology solutions that are available: "application-on-device solutions that rely on device-based GPS to determine motion; and software-based solutions which integrate directly with the vehicle, thus using the vehicle to determine motion."
MI Auto Times will follow the study and post the results for MI car dealers and drivers from both the government's research and the UMTRI study once they become available.
