Consumer Reports recently released the predicted reliability ratings for the 2011 family cars, upscale cars, and luxury cars. The predicted car reliability is based on the infrequency of serious problems within the most-recent 3 or fewer model years. This article lists the Top 5 of these cars whose reliability prediction is based on at least 2 years of model data.

By predicted reliability, Consumer Reports' Top 5 family cars, in descending order of reliability, are:

  1. V6, front-wheel-drive Ford Fusion
  2. 4-cylinder Ford Fusion
  3. Toyota Camry Hybrid
  4. 4-cylinder Toyota Camry
  5. Nissan Altima Hybrid.

For those with an ownership horizon slightly longer than 3 years, the 2010 Car Reliability Grade Point Averages for the age interval 0-to-4 years of these Top 5 family cars are:

  1. V6, front-wheel-drive Ford Fusion: Reliability GPA of 3.75
  2. 4-cylinder Ford Fusion: N/A
  3. Toyota Camry Hybrid: 3.33
  4. 4-cylinder Toyota Camry: 3.25
  5. Nissan Altima Hybrid: 3.50.

The high ranking Ford Fusions show well the quality gains achieved by Ford Motor Company over the past 20 years.

It is worth noting that the Toyota Prius, Toyota's flagship hybrid with a perfect 2010 Auto Reliability GPA of 4.00 over a nine-year data history, is not among this year's best family cars, by predicted reliability.

The Top 5 upscale cars by CR's predicted reliability are:

  1. Honda Motor Company's front-wheel-drive Acura TL
  2. Toyota Motor Corporation's rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS 250 sedan
  3. Toyota's Lexus ES
  4. Nissan Motor Company's all-wheel-drive Infiniti G sedan
  5. Nissan's rear-wheel-drive Infiniti G sedan.

The 2010 Car Reliability GPAs of these Top 5 for the 0-to-4-year age range are:

  1. Acura TL: Reliability GPA of 3.25
  2. Rwd Lexus IS 250 sedan: 2.50
  3. Lexus ES: 3.50
  4. Awd Infiniti G sedan: 3.25
  5. Rwd Infiniti G sedan: 2.75.

Two other upscale cars with high short-term predicted reliability ratings are:

  • Toyota's all-wheel-drive Lexus IS 250 sedan
  • Ford's front-wheel-drive Lincoln MKZ.

The 2010 GPA for the first 4 years of the front-wheel-drive Lincoln MKZ is a perfect 4.00. The corresponding Grade Point Average for the all-wheel-drive IS 250 sedan is not available.

The Top 5 luxury cars by predicted reliability are:

  1. Honda's Acura RL
  2. Nissan's all-wheel-drive Infiniti M
  3. Toyota's Lexus LS
  4. Toyota's rear-wheel-drive Lexus GS
  5. V6 Hyundai Genesis sedan.

The 2010 Car Reliability GPAs of these Top 5 for the 0-to-4-year age interval are:

  1. Acura RL: Reliability GPA of 2.67
  2. Awd Infiniti M: N/A
  3. Lexus LS: 3.50
  4. Rwd Lexus GS: 2.33
  5. V6 Hyundai Genesis sedan: 3.00.

The 2010 Car Reliability Grade Point Average of the Hyundai Genesis is based on only one year of data, although CR's 2011 reliability prediction for the Genesis is based on 2 years of data.

The Lexus LS has been the standard-bearer for luxury sedans for nearly 20 years, although this year it placed only third in predicted reliability.

Also bearing a notable CR reliability prediction is the rear-wheel-drive Infiniti M.

Of the eighteen 2011 family, upscale, and luxury cars with high predicted reliability rankings and with at least a 2-year data history, Toyota Motor Corporation accounts for 7 (39%), Nissan Motor Company accounts for 5 (28%), Ford Motor Company accounts for 3 (17%), Honda Motor Company accounts for 2 (10%), and Hyundai Motor Company accounts for 1 (6%).

Consumer Reports' reliability ratings are studied and followed by many North American consumers interested in purchasing a motor vehicle with a low probability of serious problems.
