Sure, splashing people on the sidewalk looks fun. You’ve done it a couple of times with your friend. Nothing can compare to the fury in the faces of the people you splashed while you are inside your car laughing so hard. But what if your car gets stuck in a puddle? What if after going over a puddle your tire burst? Who’ll be laughing now?
Driving in the rain, just like winter or summer driving is a great challenge. It may be fun for some who loves splashing people around, but when trouble on the road comes, rainy driving won’t be any fun. There are ways you can do prepare your car for this difficult driving challenge. But just make sure you aren’t preparing your car just so you can get people wet.
Prepare for the Wet Road
Double check everything before you drive off. Check your tires and brakes. Make sure they are in good shape to keep you safe on the road. Also, make sure the windshield wipers are functional so you don’t get obscured view of the road. If the blade is already brittle, consider replacement at once.
Check your auto headlights as well. Turning them on in rainy drives will not only help you see the road clearly, but help other motorists to easily spot you as well. But don’t put them on high beam. You don’t want to blind other drivers on the road, right? So, just use the low beam to give you good road view.
Keep distance
The most common problem of most drivers is driving too close. The road is wide and long. There’s really no need to tailgate anyone. So, before it’s too late for you to step on the brake, make sure to keep your distance. Remember that the road is wet and slippery. It’s best to maintain or even increase the proper distance (3 second rule) between cars on the road.
Be careful of puddles
When you see a puddle ahead, never drive through it if you are not sure of its depth. You can drive around it, if possible, or drive through a different road. The rule in puddles is that if it’s deeper that the bottom of your car door’s it’s not worth crossing. Just turn around and find another road.
Likewise, don’t drive through moving water if you can’t see the ground underneath. Your car can be swept off and its electrical system can be damaged badly resulting in costly repairs in the long run.
If you can avoid driving at all during heavy rain the better. Heavy rain coupled with thunderstorms can disorient you and create fatal driving conditions.
So, go slow and don’t be in such a hurry when it’s raining. Drive slowly and carefully. But most importantly, don’t engage in a splashing game with your friends. It won’t be fun when you have a stalled car and thousands of dollars of repair bill in your hands.
